Ground-breaking ceremony at Ehingen-Berg: Liebherr-Werk Ehingen GmbH expands site

Following the purchase of the land in June, the ground-breaking ceremony has now taken place on the Ehingen-Berg industrial estate: Liebherr will begin construction of a customer centre and associated dispatch wing on the 54-hectare site.

30-Second Takeaway Liebherr has begun construction on a new customer centre and dispatch facility at its Ehingen-Berg site in Germany, marking a significant investment aimed at optimizing production and logistics processes. Despite global economic challenges and increasing competition, the expansion underscores Liebherr’s long-term commitment to Germany as an industrial location, with political and economic leaders supporting the strategic development of the 54-hectare site. Representatives from Liebherr and politics at the symbolic ground-breaking ceremony at IG Ehingen-Berg, from left to right: Holger Baur (Deputy Chairman of the Works Council at Liebherr-Werk Ehingen), Klaus Nagl (Municipal Councillor for Ehingen, Die Freien), Daniel Pitzer and Christoph Kleiner (Managing Directors, Liebherr-Werk Ehingen), Heiner Scheffold (District Administrator, Alb-Donau istrict), Alexander Baumann (Lord Mayor of Ehingen), Sophie Albrecht (Member of the Administrative Board, Liebherr-International AG), Ulrich Heusel (Managing Director, Liebherr-Werk Ehingen), Manuel Hagel (Member of the Board, Liebherr-International AG), Ulrich Heusel (Managing Director, Liebherr-Werk Ehingen), Manuel Hagel (Member of the Councillor in Ehingen, CDU), Klaus Tappeser (District President of the Tübingen administrative district), Bernd Boos (Managing Director, Liebherr-Werk Ehingen) and Hubert Dangelmaier (Municipal Councillor in Ehingen, Bündnis90/Die Grünen). With today’s ground-breaking ceremony in the Ehingen-Berg industrial estate, Liebherr-Werk Ehingen GmbH is officially starting the development of a new site covering more than 500,000 square metres. This will complement the existing Liebherr-Werk Ehingen GmbH site along Münsinger Straße in Ehingen, which alone measures 1 million square metres and has been in existence since 1969. The investment marks a significant milestone in the crane manufacturer’s history and is currently the largest industrial expansion of a family-owned company in southern Germany. “The expansion of the Liebherr plant in Ehingen is also an important sign for Baden-Wurttemberg as an industrial location, especially in the current economic situation,” said Manuel Hagel, Member of the State Parliament and CDU parliamentary group leader in the Stuttgart state parliament. Klaus Tappeser, Regional Minister for the Tübingen administrative district, adds: “The aim of this expansion is to maintain the prosperity of the region. Today, we can say that this goal has been achieved. Many thanks to Liebherr for its loyalty to the location!” The site acquired in June 2025 is directly adjacent to the Liebherr service centre in Ehingen-Berg, which has been in operation since 2021. The additional space is needed to make production processes more efficient in the future. In order to meet the growing space requirements and the increasing demand for ever larger cranes, Liebherr will relocate individual process steps from the main plant to the new site. The first construction phase will begin with the start of development and ground preparation in September and will be followed by others – including the construction of a modern customer centre with an integrated dispatch wing and the return of previously rented logistics space. As part of the first expansion phase, some employees will initially move from the main plant to Ehingen-Berg.   Strong commitment to the location Despite the challenging economic situation, particularly due to increasing competition from Chinese manufacturers, Liebherr is reaffirming its long-term commitment to the Ehingen site with this investment. “The expansion is good for our town and its citizens. It is more than just another joint step – it is the basis for the future, for prosperity and prosperity in the interests of the people living here, an investment with foresight in our home region,” emphasises Alexander Baumann, Lord Mayor of the town of Ehingen. District Administrator Heiner Scheffold adds: “The fact that a highly innovative, world-class family business like Liebherr is expanding right here in the Alb-Donau district is a strong sign of the attractiveness of our location and a benefit for our entire region.” With over 5,000 employees, Liebherr-Werk Ehingen GmbH is the largest employer in the Alb-Donau district. “Especially for our employees, the expansion in the immediate vicinity of the main plant in Ehingen is a sign of appreciation, also in view of the successful past years. At the same time, we are investing today in order to be prepared for the challenges ahead. Therefore, the expansion, which we will declare as LWE-Süd in future, is an absolute commitment to the site, but of course also an obligation,” explains Daniel Pitzer, Commercial Director of Liebherr-Werk Ehingen GmbH. “In line with our announcements, we are making sure that operations at the new site are as environmentally friendly as possible, which means, among other things, that fossil fuels will not be used. The vehicle fleet will be powered by electricity wherever possible and the buildings will be realised in accordance with current KfW standards,” adds Ulrich Heusel, Managing Director Production at Liebherr-Werk Ehingen GmbH.
