County Lifting Adds 90-Tonne Liebherr LTM 1090-4.2 to UK Fleet

30-Second Takeaway

County Lifting Services has added a 90-tonne Liebherr LTM 1090-4.2 all-terrain crane to its fleet in Kettering, England. Named “Sammy Lou III,” the four-axle crane combines a 60-metre telescopic boom with variable outrigger positioning and fuel-saving technology. The delivery follows the company’s recent addition of a 50-tonne Liebherr LTM 1050-3.1.

Sammy Lou III Joins County Lifting’s Fleet

UK lifting and machinery movement specialist County Lifting Services has expanded its fleet with a Liebherr LTM 1090-4.2, adding another all-terrain crane to its operations in Kettering, Northamptonshire. The company introduced the new machine as “Sammy Lou III,” continuing a name carried by its previous equipment. County Lifting confirmed the arrival through its own website and a video welcoming the crane.

The delivery follows the addition of a 50-tonne Liebherr LTM 1050-3.1, continuing the company’s investment in its working fleet.

County Lifting said:

“The addition of the LTM 1090-4.2 to our regular fleet will be a boon for County Lifting Services, and we’re excited to welcome it to our regular fleet.”

A 60-Metre Main Boom with Additional Reach

The LTM 1090-4.2 has a maximum lifting capacity of 90 tonnes at a three-metre radius. Its telescopic main boom extends from 11.4 to 60 metres, providing a broad range of configurations on a four-axle carrier. County Lifting’s crane is reported to include a 9.5 to 16-metre bi-fold swingaway extension with manual offset. This adds reach beyond the main boom and provides another configuration for lifts requiring additional height or access over an obstruction.

Liebherr lists the model’s maximum hoist height at 76 metres and its maximum working radius at 62 metres. Capacity, height and radius maxima apply to different configurations; the crane’s available lifting capacity depends on the applicable load chart, boom arrangement, counterweight and support setup.

VarioBase Supports Restricted Setup Areas

Equipment reported on the new crane includes Liebherr’s VarioBase variable outrigger positioning system and remote control. VarioBase allows each outrigger to extend independently, helping accommodate obstacles or uneven amounts of available space around the carrier. The system determines permissible lifting capacities according to the actual support arrangement and working direction. This gives operators more setup options where a conventional full-width outrigger arrangement is impractical.

For a company working across machinery installations, industrial facilities and specialist lifting projects, that flexibility can be useful when matching the crane to the available working area.

VarioBallast Provides Two Counterweight Radius Settings

The LTM 1090-4.2 model features Liebherr’s VarioBallast system, with counterweight radii of 3.77 and 4.71 metres. Mechanically slewing ballasting cylinders allow the counterweight radius to change between the two settings.

The smaller radius reduces the space required behind the superstructure, while the larger radius increases the counterweight’s leverage. The model supports a maximum counterweight package of 22.5 tonnes, although the quantity supplied with County Lifting’s crane has not been specified.

The combination of adjustable ballast radius and variable outrigger positioning provides several ways to configure the machine around site constraints and lifting requirements.

Four-Axle Mobility and Flexible Transport Configurations

Liebherr developed the LTM 1090-4.2 for multiple transport configurations, including nominal axle loads of 10, 12 and 16 tonnes. Its published model information specifies that the crane can carry 8.8 tonnes of counterweight in the 12-tonne-per-axle configuration.

The carrier measures 2.55 metres wide on the specified 16.00 R25 tyres, giving it a relatively narrow footprint for road travel and access through restricted sites. These figures describe the model’s transport capabilities; County Lifting’s delivered travel configuration has not been stated.

Single-Engine Power with ECOdrive and ECOmode

The model uses a six-cylinder Liebherr diesel engine rated at 330 kW. Its single-engine design powers both the carrier and crane superstructure from the engine mounted in the undercarriage, removing the need for a separate superstructure engine. Liebherr lists a standard 8 × 6 × 8 drive and steering configuration and a maximum travel speed of 85 km/h.

County Lifting’s new crane is reported to include ECOdrive and ECOmode, which are designed to reduce fuel consumption and noise.

ECOdrive manages the drivetrain during travel to reduce engine speeds. During crane operation, ECOmode matches engine speed to the working speed selected by the operator. The pump drive can disconnect automatically when the engine is idling and reconnect when required, reducing unnecessary energy use between movements.

Supporting Machinery Movement and Specialist Lifting

County Lifting handles the lifting, movement and installation of heavy, high-value and delicate loads. Its work includes production machinery, engineering equipment, trains, aircraft, vehicles and works of art.

The company operates all-terrain cranes with capacities up to 130 tonnes, alongside spider cranes, pick-and-carry cranes, loader cranes and specialist forklift-type lifting machines.

The new 90-tonne Liebherr adds another option within that equipment mix, combining main-boom reach with flexible setup configurations for the company’s crane hire and specialist lifting work.
