State Service Boosts Cometto SPMT Fleet with Four New 6-Axle Units

30-Second Takeaway

Texas-based State Service has expanded its Cometto SPMT fleet with four new 6-axle self-propelled modular transporter units, six 8.40-metre spacers, and a 368 kW Power Pack Unit. The delivery increases the company’s fleet to 70 SPMT axle lines, strengthening its capability to handle complex offshore and energy sector transports along the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway.

Cometto SPMTs Expand State Service Heavy Transport Capability

State Service, headquartered in Ingleside, Texas, has reinforced its heavy transport operations with the latest delivery of Cometto SPMT equipment in January 2026.

The new shipment includes:

  • Four 6-axle SPMT units

  • Six 8.40-metre spacers

  • One 368 kW Power Pack Unit (PPU)

With this addition, State Service now operates a total of:

  • 70 SPMT axle lines

  • Six spacers

  • Four Power Pack Units

The company has been a Cometto customer in the self-propelled modular transporter (SPMT) sector since 2013, steadily expanding its fleet to meet increasing payload requirements in the offshore and energy industries.

Joachim Kolb, Sales Manager at Cometto, explained:

“Since the beginning of our collaboration, the fleet has been continuously expanded to meet the increasing payload requirements of our customers.”

Rapid Deployment and Plug-and-Play Integration

Cometto SPMT Fleet Expansion

The newly delivered equipment was quickly integrated into operations.

Ted Little, Transport Manager at State Service, described the immediate deployment:

“The new self-propelled vehicles arrived at our Ingleside facility on a Tuesday. Just one day later, we had assembled two configurations with 18 axle lines each – including coupled spacer and Power Pack. This allowed us to keep to our tight schedule and carry out the first transports as planned on Friday.”

The ability to rapidly configure and deploy SPMT combinations is critical in high-demand industrial environments where project schedules leave little room for delay.

Precision Offshore Module Handling

The new Cometto SPMTs were first utilised in an open compound environment to transport the topside structure of an offshore work platform.

The operation involved:

  • Positioning the topside between four cranes

  • Lifting the topside structure

  • Precisely manoeuvring the base structure underneath

  • Achieving millimetre-accurate alignment

  • Enabling final welding and structural integration

The transport and positioning process required synchronised SPMT movement and precise load control to ensure safe integration of the module components.

Little commented:

“That’s exactly what we mean by Simply Plug and Play. The equipment works reliably and safely. In the best sense of the word, we are … propelled to the MAX.”

Strategic Gulf Coast Location Advantage

Founded in 1976, State Service specialises in innovative steel construction solutions for the energy sector.

Its production facility in Ingleside, Texas, is strategically located along the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, offering direct logistical advantages:

  • Onsite pier access

  • Direct barge loading of offshore modules

  • Immediate access to the Gulf of America

  • Short transit routes to offshore installations

This geographic positioning, combined with an expanded SPMT fleet, enables efficient handling and delivery of large offshore structures.

Meeting Growing Payload Demands

As offshore platforms, energy modules and industrial structures continue to increase in size and weight, transport providers must scale their modular transporter capacity accordingly.

The expansion to 70 SPMT axle lines enhances State Service’s ability to configure larger transport spreads, distribute load weight efficiently and maintain stability during heavy moves.

Cometto’s modular SPMT systems allow:

  • Flexible axle combinations

  • Adjustable width and length configurations

  • High manoeuvrability in confined yards

  • Integrated power pack solutions

Such capabilities are essential for Gulf Coast fabrication yards supporting offshore and energy infrastructure developments.
