Liebherr 240 EC-B Fibre Supports Mountain Water Treatment Project in Italy

30-Second Takeaway

A Liebherr 240 EC-B Fibre tower crane is handling the principal construction lifts at the new Bovegno Drinking Water Treatment Plant in Italy’s Val Trompia region. Installed by Facchetti Costruzioni in collaboration with Niederstätter, the crane supports work on the main building, reinforced concrete tanks and auxiliary structures. The mountain site presents restricted space, sensitive surroundings and a nearby medium-voltage power line. Its lightweight fibre hoist rope offers lifting and maintenance advantages that the contractor considers particularly valuable under these conditions. The plant forms the final phase of a regional water supply project serving thousands of residents and businesses.

Liebherr 240 EC-B Fibre

Facchetti Costruzioni has deployed a Liebherr 240 EC-B Fibre tower crane at Bovegno, where a new drinking water treatment plant is being built to strengthen water supply infrastructure across Val Trompia.

The project is the third and final phase of the valley’s integrated water supply programme. Its purpose is to provide a modern, reliable drinking water supply for communities and local businesses.

The crane, supplied in collaboration with Niederstätter, is undertaking its fourth deployment. According to Liebherr, it was the first tower crane with the manufacturer’s Fibre Rope Technology to arrive in Italy and remains one of relatively few operating in the country.

Lifting Across the Civil Construction Works

The crane handles reinforcing steel, formwork, precast concrete elements, construction materials and equipment throughout the civil works.

Its lifting duties cover the main treatment building, reinforced concrete water tanks and auxiliary structures. The tanks use the White Tank construction system, which incorporates watertightness into the reinforced concrete structure.

This gives the tower crane a central role in the construction sequence, supporting both structural work and the movement of materials around the constrained site.

Working on a Restricted Mountain Site

The treatment plant is being built on a mountainside in an environmentally sensitive area. Ground stabilisation using micropiles was completed before excavation to support site stability.

A medium-voltage power line runs approximately 20 metres from the working area, requiring strict safety procedures during lifting operations. That distance describes the site layout rather than a prescribed crane clearance.

The facility’s design also incorporates timber and natural stone finishes to help integrate the completed buildings into the surrounding Alpine landscape.

For Facchetti Costruzioni, the crane’s fibre rope technology provides useful operational benefits where site space and access are limited.

Fibre Rope Technology and Crane Performance

Liebherr’s Fibre Rope Technology replaces the conventional steel hoist rope with a high-performance fibre rope. Its lower weight reduces the rope’s contribution to the crane’s suspended load, allowing more of the available lifting capacity to be used for the payload.

For the published 240 EC-B 10 Fibre model, Liebherr specifies a maximum lifting capacity of 10 tonnes, a maximum radius of 68 metres and a capacity of 2.5 tonnes at that radius. These are model specifications, rather than confirmation of the jib length or configuration installed at Bovegno.

Liebherr says its wider fibre rope technology can increase load capacities by up to 40 per cent, depending on the crane and configuration. Its product information for the 240 EC-B Fibre highlights up to 20 per cent greater jib-head capacity compared with steel-rope cranes.

The manufacturer reports more than 15 years of development and over 87,000 hours of test-rig operation behind the technology, with approximately 400 Fibre cranes operating worldwide.

It also states that an improved repair process allows up to 90 per cent of rope damage to be repaired on site. Together with monitored maintenance and longer rope service life, this can reduce the need for replacement and associated downtime.

Contractor Perspective

Facchetti Costruzioni Managing Director Roberto Facchetti said:

“The new Bovegno Drinking Water Treatment Plant is a strategic infrastructure project for our region, and we are proud to contribute to its construction. At Facchetti Costruzioni, innovation means investing in technologies that improve safety, efficiency and construction quality. Liebherr solutions allow us to tackle even the most demanding projects with reliability and precision and outstanding performance. The long-standing partnership between Facchetti Costruzioni and Niederstätter is built on shared values and the tradition of two family-run companies, just like Liebherr.”

Facchetti Costruzioni is celebrating its 65th anniversary in 2026. Liebherr says the contractor’s most recent crane purchase, completed in 2025, was concluded personally by its founder at Liebherr’s tower crane operation in Biberach, Germany.
