Seaboard Marine Orders Three Liebherr LHM 550 Mobile Harbour Cranes for U.S. Terminals

30 Second Takeaway

Seaboard Marine is investing in three Liebherr LHM 550 mobile harbour cranes for its U.S. terminals at PortMiami and the Port of Houston, enhancing berth productivity, vessel handling capability, and long-term energy efficiency at two key trade gateways.

Seaboard Marine Strengthens Terminal Infrastructure

Seaboard Marine has reinforced its terminal infrastructure with an order for three Liebherr LHM 550 mobile harbour cranes, supporting expanding container and multipurpose cargo operations at its privately operated terminals in PortMiami and the Port of Houston.

The cranes will be delivered in high-rise configuration and are intended to support increasing cargo volumes while maintaining fast vessel turnaround times at both ports.

LHM 550 Performance and Configuration

The Liebherr LHM 550 is designed to handle a wide range of port operations and is well suited to servicing New-Panamax vessels.

Key specifications include:

  • Maximum outreach: up to 54 metres

  • Maximum lifting capacity: 104 metric tonnes

  • Electric drive systems, prepared for future shore power integration

  • Hydrostatic drive technology for smooth operation under variable load conditions

These features support scalable and energy-efficient terminal operations while maintaining operational flexibility.

Deployment at PortMiami and Port of Houston

At PortMiami, which handled more than 1.1 million TEUs in 2024, the new cranes will enhance berth productivity and support increasing volumes of refrigerated and breakbulk cargo. The investment aligns with Seaboard Marine’s broader strategy, including the expansion of its LNG-powered vessel fleet.

At the Port of Houston, where container throughput exceeded 4.1 million TEUs last year, the additional crane capacity will improve operational flexibility and help maintain competitive transit times in a high-volume cargo environment.

Customisation, Service, and Digital Support

The three cranes will feature customer-specific adaptations, including:

  • Tower extensions

  • Tailored support pads

  • Customised paintwork

Liebherr’s regional service network, supported by Liebherr USA, will provide both remote assistance and on-site support through dedicated service teams in Miami and Houston under a full-service agreement.

Operator training and digital solutions including Liebherr’s LiDAT smartApp  will support performance monitoring, predictive maintenance, and safety management.
