Where Engineering Meets Architecture: Liebherr Cranes Build the KJ Plein Development in Den Haag

30 Second Takeaway

Two Liebherr 550 EC-H 20 Litronic tower cranes are playing a central role in the construction of the KJ Plein development in the heart of Den Haag. Operating with hook heights of up to 120 metres, the cranes enable precise, efficient lifting for high-rise and façade construction on a tightly constrained inner-city site, supporting progress toward completion in spring 2026.

A Landmark Urban Development in Den Haag

A distinctive new urban quarter is taking shape at KJ Plein, located directly next to Den Haag Central Station. The development is one of the most significant regeneration projects in the Netherlands’ third-largest city and includes two high-rise residential towers, commercial space, and generous public areas.

Since November 2023, two Liebherr 550 EC-H 20 Litronic High-Top tower cranes from Van der Spek Netherlands’ rental fleet have been in continuous operation on site, supporting construction activities under challenging inner-city conditions.

High-Rise Construction with Precision

Tower Cranes Reaching 120 Metres

The KJ Plein project comprises two residential towers, each standing 93 metres tall, delivering a total of 395 homes across owner-occupied, rental, and social housing categories. Around 1,300 square metres of gastronomy and retail space will complete the mixed-use development.

Designed by renowned architecture practice Powerhouse Company, the project requires highly accurate lifting operations for structural components and complex façade elements. The two Liebherr cranes operate with hook heights of up to 120 metres and have been climbed through three climbing stages, ensuring continued lifting performance as the towers rise.

Efficiency in a Constrained City Centre

Safe Lifting in Limited Space

Located in Den Haag’s busy station district, the construction site is defined by restricted space, heavy pedestrian and transport traffic, and tightly controlled delivery schedules.

The Liebherr 550 EC-H cranes provide high lifting capacity, compact dimensions, and precise control, enabling safe and efficient material handling despite the confined environment. Their responsive Litronic control systems allow millimetre-accurate positioning, which is critical for both structural and architectural components.

Façade Installation Under Challenging Conditions

Night Work and Special Regulations

A major focus of the crane operations has been the installation of the project’s complex

façades. Using the Liebherr cranes, construction teams have installed:

  • 10,000 aluminium cassette panels

  • 7,600 square metres of GRC façade elements

  • More than 11,000 square metres of aluminium window frames

Due to the site’s proximity to transport infrastructure and residential areas, parts of the work were carried out during night shifts under strict noise and lighting regulations, further highlighting the importance of precise, reliable crane performance.

Technical Performance with Flexibility

Liebherr 550 EC-H 20 Litronic

The Liebherr 550 EC-H 20 Litronic High-Top cranes combine robust structural design with efficient modular construction. With lifting capacities of up to 20 tonnes, the cranes are well suited for heavy precast elements, reinforcement cages, formwork, and façade modules.

Their modular design and low number of climbing operations required allow construction to continue with minimal interruption as building heights increase.

Sustainable Urban Development

Building for the Future

The KJ Plein project is a showcase of modern and sustainable urban development in the Netherlands. Alongside energy-efficient construction methods, the development prioritises high-quality public spaces, including green roof terraces, inner courtyards, and landscaped outdoor areas designed to enhance quality of life for future residents.
