Chinese marine crane manufacturer ZPMC (Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industry) has shipped the first two units of its new mega ship-to-shore (STS) cranes to DP World UK, marking a significant milestone in European port infrastructure development.

The cranes are part of a £60 million order for four units, which will become the largest STS quay cranes in Europe upon arrival at DP World Southampton.

Mega STS Cranes Designed for Ultra-Large Container Ships

Key performance features include:

  • Capability to service ultra-large container ships

  • Four-hook lifting system

  • Ability to move two 40ft containers simultaneously in a single cycle

This advanced lifting configuration is expected to significantly improve container handling efficiency and turnaround times at the port.

Delivery Timeline and Transport

The first two fully assembled cranes departed ZPMC’s facility aboard the heavy transport vessel Zhen Hua 28 and are scheduled to arrive in the UK next month.

The remaining two units are expected to be delivered by August, completing the full installation of the new crane fleet.

Strategic Investment in Port Efficiency

Aart Hille Ris Lambers of DP World said:

“Our order for these new large quay cranes comes at a crucial time for DP World Southampton. We are continually innovating and investing to enhance our operations to give our customers, who operate the world’s largest container vessels, a smooth and efficient service.”

He added:

“As our productivity and handling rates at Southampton continue to grow year on year, and we develop our nationwide end-to-end supply chain network, we’re always looking for ways to improve our infrastructure and our offer to customers, while serving the national interest.”
