DP World Constanța Expands Heavy-Lift Capability with Electric Liebherr Mobile Harbour Cranes

30 Second Takeaway

DP World Constanța, operator of the largest container terminal on the Black Sea, has taken delivery of two electric Liebherr LHM 600 mobile harbour cranes, significantly expanding its multi-purpose heavy-lift and project cargo capabilities. Configured for tandem lifts of up to 400 tonnes, the cranes support DP World’s sustainability, safety, and growth objectives while enhancing the port’s role as a key multimodal logistics gateway for Eastern Europe.

Electric Liebherr Cranes Arrive at Black Sea Logistics Hub

DP World Constanța has strengthened its operational capabilities with the delivery of two Liebherr LHM 600 mobile harbour cranes, marking a major step forward in the port’s heavy-lift, container, and bulk handling capacity.

As the largest container terminal on the Black Sea, DP World Constanța serves as a critical multimodal gateway for Eastern Europe, supporting integrated logistics, project cargo, and Ro-Ro services. The new cranes introduce multi-purpose lifting capability that unites container, bulk, and heavy-lift handling on a single platform.

Tandem Lifting up to 400 Tonnes with Advanced Safety Systems

The two LHM 600 cranes are configured for tandem operations, enabling combined lifts of up to 400 tonnes ideal for project cargo and heavy breakbulk.

Key features include:

  • Advanced electric drive systems for efficient, low-emission operation

  • Diesel backup engines to ensure uninterrupted operations

  • Liebherr Sycratronic assistance system for safe, synchronised tandem lifting

  • Integrated 360° camera systems providing full-surround operator visibility

  • Special double supporting pads engineered to match berth structural requirements

These features significantly enhance operational safety, precision, and reliability during high-capacity lifts.

Multi-Purpose Performance for Diverse Cargo Streams

Designed for maximum flexibility, the LHM 600 cranes can seamlessly switch between:

  • Container handling

  • Grab operations

  • Heavy-lift and project cargo assignments

This adaptability allows DP World Constanța to develop new cargo streams while maintaining high productivity and short cycle times, supporting the terminal’s long-term commercial strategy.

Strategic Investment Supporting Growth and Sustainability

Marian Drăgoi, General Manager at DP World Constanța, said:

“This project is more than an equipment acquisition. For the last 20 years, the Port of Constanța’s success has been built on continuous investment in modernisation, digitalisation, and diversification of our operational capacities. The new mobile harbour cranes will once again enable the port to respond to rapid developments in the operational and commercial environment.”

DP World Constanța handles cargo ranging from wind turbines and industrial machinery to containers and vehicles, with reinforced platforms and deep-water berths supporting simultaneous operations and fast vessel turnaround.

Tailored Technology for a Growing European Gateway

The cranes incorporate Liebherr’s hydrostatic drive and advanced control systems, delivering smooth, precise performance across varying load conditions.

Structural adaptations including reinforced supporting pads were developed in close collaboration with DP World to meet site-specific berth constraints, ensuring stability during high-capacity lifts.

Andreas Ritschel, General Manager Sales Mobile Harbour Cranes at Liebherr-Rostock GmbH, commented:

“Working alongside DP World Constanța allowed us to align engineering solutions with the terminal’s broader infrastructure goals. It is a partnership focused on practical outcomes—safe tandem lifting, operational flexibility, and readiness for diverse cargo profiles.”

Setting a New Benchmark for Black Sea Port Operations

This investment positions DP World Constanța at the forefront of modern, sustainable port operations in the region. Backed by Liebherr’s global service and support network, the new cranes will underpin long-term performance, flexibility, and safety supporting the port’s role in European logistics and project cargo growth.
