30-Second Takeaway Mammoet has taken delivery of the world’s first Grove GMK5150L-1e plug-in hybrid All Terrain crane, combining electric superstructure operation with a conventional carrier. With up to five hours of zero-emission lifting and extended operation when plugged in, the crane delivers full performance while significantly reducing carbon emissions. The move reflects growing demand for sustainable lifting solutions, particularly in urban environments with strict emissions regulations. Mammoet Grove GMK5150L-1e Hybrid All Terrain Crane Sets New Benchmark for Sustainable Lifting Dutch international heavy lift and transport specialist Mammoet has taken delivery of the world’s first Grove GMK5150L-1e plug-in hybrid All Terrain crane, marking a major milestone in the transition toward low-emission lifting solutions. The new crane was officially handed over in Breda, Netherlands, and represents a significant step forward in combining traditional crane performance with electric operation. Hybrid Design Combines Electric and Conventional Power The Grove GMK5150L-1e features a plug-in hybrid system, pairing an electric-powered superstructure with a conventional five-axle carrier. Key features include: 180kWh battery pack providing up to five hours of zero-emission operation Ability to operate while plugged in and charging, extending runtime up to 20 hours depending on application Charging via AC and DC power supplies Integrated 170kW generator within the carrier The system also allows the battery to recharge while travelling between job sites, particularly when using HVO fuel, reducing overall carbon emissions by up to 90 percent. Full Performance with Proven Grove Technology Despite its hybrid design, the Mammoet Grove GMK5150L-1e hybrid All Terrain crane maintains the same performance characteristics as its diesel counterpart. It includes: 60 metre main boom Identical load charts to standard models CCS control system with boom configurator MAXbase variable outrigger system A variant, the GMK5150XL-1e, offers a longer 68.7 metre main boom, further expanding application flexibility. Meeting Growing Demand for Zero-Emission Solutions Mammoet operations manager Eelco de Leeuw said: “Sustainability is one of the key drivers of our business. In the Netherlands and beyond, requirements are increasing rapidly. Cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague already enforce zero-emission targets for many projects, and carbon footprints are increasingly evaluated before contracts are awarded.” The investment highlights the increasing importance of environmental performance in project tendering and execution, particularly in urban markets. Engineered for Flexibility and Independence Andreas Cremer, Manitowoc’s mobile crane product manager, added: “The battery capacity on this unit was carefully sized, following a comprehensive job profile analysis to ensure full operational coverage. Combined with the 'charge while driving' feature, these Plug-in Hybrid cranes deliver exceptional flexibility and independence - capable of handling the toughest jobs without relying on grid charging.” This flexibility allows operators to maintain productivity even in areas with limited charging infrastructure.
