CM Labs Expands Port Operator Training with AI Assistant and Remote Operations Tools

4 min read

30-Second Takeaway

CM Labs is expanding its Intellia Workforce Training System with updated port equipment curricula, a new Scenario Editor and an AI Assistant for instructors and trainees. The training portfolio includes ship-to-shore crane and internal transfer vehicle simulation, while a Remote Operating Station recreates a control-room setting for remote-operations training. In the ship-to-shore curriculum, trainees practise controlling crane movement and load swing across simulated crane sizes from Panamax to MegaMax. CM Labs announced demonstrations at TOC Americas in Cartagena and TOC Asia in Singapore, with the Singapore event scheduled for November 10–11.

CM Labs Port Operator Training Adds Custom Scenarios and AI Support

CM Labs is adding new tools to its port operator training system as terminals prepare for more advanced equipment and remote operations. The updates bring together simulation curricula, instructor tools and training management features within the Intellia Workforce Training System.

The new Scenario Editor lets instructors configure equipment and operating conditions for selected simulation curricula. This gives training teams a way to adapt exercises to the terminal environments where operators will work.

CM Labs is also introducing an AI Assistant across its Ports portfolio. Instructors can use it to find curriculum information, get exercise recommendations and adapt training to individual operators. Trainees can access assistance within the simulator. The AI Assistant complements existing Record and Replay and Performance Leaderboards, which instructors can use to review sessions and assess operator performance.

Ship-to-Shore Crane Simulation Covers Heavy Quayside Work

At TOC Americas in Cartagena, Colombia, CM Labs announced plans to demonstrate its Advantage simulator running ship-to-shore crane and internal transfer vehicle curricula. The ship-to-shore crane curriculum trains operators to manage crane movement, control load swing and place containers under varied simulated operating conditions.

The curriculum covers simulated ship-to-shore cranes from Panamax to MegaMax sizes. CM Labs lists modelled water-side outreach of 50 to 72 metres, land-side backreach of 20 to 26 metres, and spreader heights above the rail of 38 to 50 metres. Trainees practise with different vessel orientations, container types and dual-cycle workflows. These are specifications for the simulated crane equipment in the curriculum.

Internal Transfer Vehicle Training Builds Yard Skills

The Internal Transfer Vehicle (ITV) curriculum covers terminal tractor or yard-truck operation between the quayside and the terminal yard. Training scenarios include driving with and without trailers, reversing with mirrors, manoeuvring in tight spaces, navigating yard traffic and interacting with cranes during loading and unloading.

The simulated ITV is a 4×2 model with a hydraulic system and an adjustable-height hydraulic fifth wheel. CM Labs lists the fifth wheel’s lifting capacity at 34,000 kilograms. Exercises also cover trailer connections, twistlock procedures, crane handoffs and operational faults.

Remote Operating Station Prepares Operators for Control-Room Work

At TOC Asia in Singapore, scheduled for November 10–11, CM Labs planned to demonstrate the Intellia Workforce Training System and its Remote Operating Station (ROS). The station recreates a control-room environment, using camera-based views to help operators build situational awareness and prepare for remote control of port equipment.

The ROS training extends the simulator’s focus beyond cab-based machine operation. Operators can practise interpreting camera views and the surrounding work environment as part of preparation for remote operations.

Intellia Connects Simulators, Curricula and Training Management

The Intellia Workforce Training System combines simulator hardware, structured equipment curricula and training management tools. Its port training lineup includes quayside and yard-side equipment, allowing terminal organizations to build training around different types of equipment and work areas.

Record and Replay and Performance Leaderboards add tools for reviewing trainee sessions and tracking performance. The Scenario Editor and AI Assistant add customization and in-training support to that system, with the goal of helping instructors tailor exercises and support operators as they progress through training.

TOC Americas and TOC Asia Demonstrations

TOC Americas took place October 20–22 in Cartagena. CM Labs had announced that its Advantage simulator would be available at Booth B42, running the ship-to-shore crane and ITV curricula. The company also listed Nicolae Sterescu for an October 22 Tech TOC panel, “Beyond the Hype: What Does It Actually Mean to Invest in AI?”

TOC Asia is scheduled for November 10–11 in Singapore. CM Labs announced a demonstration of the Intellia Workforce Training System and Remote Operating Station at Booth M2.

About CM Labs

CM Labs develops simulation-based workforce training systems for heavy equipment operators. Its Intellia Workforce Training System combines high-fidelity simulators, structured curricula and training management software. The company’s simulation platform uses physics-based technology and Vortex Studio to model equipment behaviour and training environments.

CM Labs says its systems are used in more than 50 countries and that it has delivered more than 2,000 training system installations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What new tools is CM Labs adding to its port training system?

The updates include a Scenario Editor for selected curricula and an AI Assistant available across the Ports portfolio. The Scenario Editor lets instructors adjust equipment and operating conditions. The AI Assistant helps instructors find curriculum information and exercises, adapt training to operator needs and provide trainees with in-simulator support.

What port equipment can operators train on?

The event announcement highlighted ship-to-shore cranes and internal transfer vehicles. CM Labs’ wider Ports portfolio includes other quayside and yard-side equipment curricula.

What does the ship-to-shore crane curriculum teach?

It trains operators to manage crane movement, control load swing and place containers. Exercises cover a range of container types, vessel orientations, weather and equipment conditions, as well as simulated cranes from Panamax to MegaMax sizes.

What does the internal transfer vehicle curriculum cover?

The ITV curriculum prepares operators to move through port-yard environments with or without trailers. Training includes reversing with mirrors, manoeuvring in tight spaces, navigating traffic, working around cranes and practising trailer and twistlock procedures.

What is the Remote Operating Station?

The Remote Operating Station recreates a control-room setting for training. It uses camera-based views to help operators develop situational awareness for remote equipment operations.

How do Record and Replay and Performance Leaderboards fit into the system?

They give instructors ways to review training sessions and assess operator performance. These tools are part of the Intellia training environment alongside the simulator curricula, Scenario Editor and AI Assistant.

Where and when was CM Labs demonstrating the system?

CM Labs announced a demonstration at TOC Americas in Cartagena, October 20–22, and a further demonstration at TOC Asia in Singapore, November 10–11. The announced booths were B42 at TOC Americas and M2 at TOC Asia.
