Liebherr Fibre Ropes Gain Longer Service Life and Up to 12 Years of Use

30-Second Takeaway

Liebherr has increased the overall service life of its tower crane Fibre ropes from 14 to 16 years, with permitted use extending to a maximum of 12 years in temperate climates and eight years in hot climates. The change applies automatically to new ropes and those already in service, regardless of production date. Liebherr based the extension on multi-year ageing trials and seven years of field evaluations, reporting that at least half of its Fibre cranes could benefit significantly. Actual rope condition and accumulated stress remain decisive, with the existing red signal layer continuing to indicate when the discard criterion has been reached.

Liebherr Fibre Ropes

Liebherr has extended the permitted lifetime of its Fibre tower crane hoist ropes following testing and analysis of equipment operating in the field. The overall service life increases from 14 to 16 years. This is the total calendar allowance, including storage and operational use, calculated from the date the rope was made up. That date is engraved on the rope’s end connection.

Within that overall allowance, the maximum period of operational use is now up to 12 years in temperate regions and up to eight years in hot regions, according to Liebherr’s accompanying technical explanation. The extension gives owners greater scope to retain ropes that remain within their permitted condition and usage limits, particularly on cranes that have experienced comparatively low operating stress.

Ageing Trials and Field Experience Support the Extension

Liebherr exposed several ropes to weathering at different locations worldwide for periods of two, four and six years. The ropes were then tested to failure under realistic conditions using different test arrangements. According to the manufacturer, ropes exposed for six years produced test results nearly identical to those of new ropes.

Alongside these trials, Liebherr evaluated how Fibre cranes were being used and how operating patterns affected rope life. Seven years of field evaluations showed that many ropes had experienced relatively low stress within their previously permitted operating period.

The company reports that at least half of the cranes evaluated could benefit significantly from the extension. The potential benefit depends on each rope’s operating history and remaining condition.

Automatic Application to Existing Ropes

The revised limits apply to all new Fibre ropes and those already in the field, regardless of their production date. Customers do not need to submit an application or take action to activate the extension.

The overall lifetime remains tied to the original date marked on the end connection. The change therefore extends the permitted allowance without resetting the rope’s age.

Liebherr expects more than 400 Fibre cranes to be in the market by the end of 2026.

Rope Condition Remains the Deciding Factor

The extended period is a maximum allowance, rather than a guaranteed working life for every rope. Hoist ropes are wear components. The number of lifts, load weights and shift patterns influence how quickly a rope accumulates stress. Liebherr also identifies ambient temperature as a factor in its explanation of the revised limits.

A heavily used rope may reach its discard criterion before the calendar limit. Liebherr says the appearance of the red signal layer continues to indicate that criterion.

This distinction is central to the update: ropes with remaining usable life can benefit from the longer allowance, while ropes that reach their discard condition earlier still require replacement.

Repairability Reduces Premature Replacement

Liebherr identifies repairability as an important part of Fibre technology’s operating economics. Many instances of damage can be repaired directly on the crane, reducing the need to remove and replace the complete rope. Combined with rope shortening, the manufacturer reports that approximately 90 per cent of rope damage can be resolved.

This can reduce downtime and help owners use a rope until it reaches its discard criterion, rather than replacing it following repairable damage.

For comparison, Liebherr evaluated steel hoist ropes in its own rental fleets, covering almost 200 cranes over periods of up to 13 years. Those ropes remained on the crane for an average of two to two-and-a-half years before replacement. The manufacturer says several major partners have reported similar experience. These figures describe the fleets evaluated and are not universal replacement intervals for steel ropes.

Longer Use Builds on Replacement Rope Price Reduction

The lifetime extension follows a 26 per cent reduction in replacement rope prices introduced in April 2025. Liebherr presents the longer permitted period of use, an increase of up to 20 per cent, as another step towards improving Fibre technology’s cost-effectiveness. The actual financial benefit will depend on rope utilisation, repair requirements and replacement timing.

The manufacturer also reports that Fibre-equipped crane configurations can achieve lifting capacity increases of up to 40 per cent compared with corresponding steel rope systems. That benefit depends on the crane model and configuration.

Liebherr said:

“We are convinced that the technology will prevail in the market thanks to its economic advantages.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the new overall service life of Liebherr Fibre ropes?

The overall service life has increased from 14 to 16 years, calculated from the date the rope was made up.

How long can a Fibre rope remain in operational use?

Liebherr permits up to 12 years in temperate climates and up to eight years in hot climates, subject to rope condition and the applicable discard criterion.

Does the extension apply to ropes already in service?

Yes. It applies automatically to new ropes and existing ropes, regardless of production date.

Does every rope qualify for 12 years of use?

No. Climate, operating stress and rope condition determine the applicable working life. A rope may reach its discard criterion earlier.

How is the discard criterion indicated?

Liebherr says the appearance of the rope’s red signal layer continues to indicate that the discard criterion has been reached.
