The 2,000th Liebherr mobile harbour crane is celebrated by the entire staff at Liebherr’s Rostock production facility. This historic moment underscores Liebherr's five decades of engineering excellence and innovation in mobile harbour cranes.

Five Decades at the Forefront of Mobile Harbour Cranes

For 50 years, Liebherr has played a defining role in the development of mobile harbour crane technology, securing its position as the global market leader for more than 15 consecutive years. The production of the 2,000th LHM at Liebherr’s Rostock,

Germany facility marks a major milestone in the company’s maritime history.

This achievement reflects not only Liebherr’s manufacturing scale, but also its continued focus on performance, versatility, and long-term customer partnerships within the global port and logistics sector.

The 2,000th LHM: A Bespoke LHM 600 for Marcegaglia

The milestone crane is a custom-configured Liebherr LHM 600, built specifically for Marcegaglia, one of Europe’s leading steel processing companies.

Key Specifications:

  • Maximum lifting capacity: 154 tonnes

  • Outreach: 61 metres

  • Vessel class: Up to New-Panamax

  • Applications: Steel coils, billets, plates, containers, bulk and general cargo

The crane will become the sixth Liebherr mobile harbour crane in Marcegaglia’s fleet and will play a central role in handling steel products at the Port of Ravenna.

The LHM 600 will be headed to Ravenna, Italy. The “Italian” side of the slewing platform is adorned with one of Ravenna’s famous landmarks, the Basilica di Sant'Apollinare Nuovo. It also features dock workers and an Italian inscription.

Designed for Performance, Versatility, and Precision

The LHM 600 combines high lifting capacity, long outreach, and advanced hydrostatic drive technology, allowing for smooth, precise cargo handling across a wide range of port operations.

Equipped with multiple attachments, the crane can seamlessly transition between:

  • Steel products (coils, sheets, strips)

  • Containers

  • General cargo

  • Bulk materials

Advanced control systems ensure efficient workflows, reduced cycle times, and maximum operational flexibility, supporting Marcegaglia’s logistics strategy.

A Symbol of Innovation and Partnership

What sets the 2,000th LHM apart is its hand-crafted slewing platform design, created as a tribute to both the crane’s origin and destination.

Dual-Sided Design Concept:

  • Italian Side:

    • Basilica di Sant’Apollinare Nuovo (Ravenna landmark)

    • Dock workers in action

    • Italian inscription

  • German Side:

    • Lighthouse symbolising maritime heritage

    • Dock workers from Liebherr and Marcegaglia

    • German inscription

This unique design reflects the fusion of German engineering precision and Italian industrial tradition, celebrating decades of collaboration between Liebherr Rostock and Marcegaglia.

A Partnership Built Over Decades

T

he collaboration between Liebherr and Marcegaglia dates back to 2001, when the first LHM 400 entered service at the Port of Ravenna. Since then, the fleet has steadily expanded, each crane reinforcing operational capability and logistical efficiency.

With the LHM 600 now the largest mobile harbour crane in Ravenna, Marcegaglia continues to invest in modern port infrastructure backed by Liebherr’s global service network.

Looking Ahead

A formal handover ceremony will take place in Ravenna this summer, celebrating both the milestone crane and the enduring partnership between the two companies.

“This milestone LHM 600 exemplifies our commitment to delivering innovative solutions for our customers,” Andreas Ritschel, General Manager of Sales, Mobile Harbour Cranes, Liebherr-Rostock GmbH

The 2,000th LHM stands as a powerful symbol of innovation, reliability, and shared values, driving the future of maritime logistics.
