Liebherr has been at the forefront of mobile harbour crane production for 50 years, solidifying its position as a global market leader for over 15 years. The Liebherr facility in Rostock has achieved a remarkable milestone with the production of its 2,000th LHM.

The specially-configured LHM 600, designed for Marcegaglia, boasts an impressive lifting capacity of up to 154 tonnes and an outreach of 61 metres. Its slewing platform features a bespoke design that harmoniously blends maritime and regional aesthetics.
Marcegaglia, a prominent player in steel processing, will leverage this crane for the efficient loading and unloading of products such as steel coils, billets, and plates.
The acquisition of the LHM 600 by Marcegaglia represents a significant achievement as the 2,000th mobile harbour crane manufactured and delivered by Liebherr. This crane exemplifies Liebherr’s engineering prowess and celebrates five decades of innovation within the maritime sector. The LHM 600 will play a crucial role in managing general cargo, containers, and bulk materials, marking it as the sixth Liebherr mobile harbour crane in Marcegaglia's fleet.

Tradition and innovation converge for the 2,000th time. The LHM 600, set to be delivered to Ravenna, Italy, will play a crucial role in enhancing Marcegaglia’s logistics operations. This crane is expertly designed to handle vessels up to New-Panamax size. Its primary function will involve managing steel products such as coils, sheets, and strips. Equipped with various attachments, the crane can seamlessly transition between handling containers, general cargo, and bulk materials, highlighting its remarkable versatility. Additionally, the hydrostatic drive and advanced control systems facilitate precise and efficient cargo handling. The objective is to achieve overall flexibility and smoother operational processes. Another notable feature is the distinctive, hand-crafted design of its slewing platform, which draws inspiration from the maritime heritage of Rostock, Germany, and Ravenna, Italy, infusing a sense of artistry into this historically significant engineering achievement.
A symbol of innovation and partnership
The distinctive slewing platform design of the 2,000th LHM exemplifies the innovative spirit and strong partnership between Liebherr and Marcegaglia. This design showcases a dual-sided motif: one side features an Italian theme, including a representation of the Basilica di Sant'Apollinare Nuovo from Ravenna, dock workers engaged in port logistics, and an Italian inscription. Conversely, the other side presents a German text alongside a lighthouse, underscoring the maritime and industrial heritage of Liebherr Rostock, the crane's birthplace. These elements collectively reflect the rich history and collaboration between Liebherr Rostock and Marcegaglia. Ultimately, this design symbolizes the harmonious integration of German engineering precision and Italian passion, representing a mutual dedication to innovation and quality within the maritime sector.
Since the dawn of the new millennium, the partnership between these two companies and cultures has played a pivotal role in the evolution of the Ravenna port. The introduction of the first Liebherr mobile harbour crane, the LHM 400, in 2001 signified the commencement of a transformative journey. Over the years, four additional mobile harbour cranes have been incorporated into the fleet, each serving as a testament to the enduring collaboration and shared commitment to excellence. Now, with the sixth mobile harbour crane being the largest in the Ravenna fleet, it enhances logistics capacity while embodying style and sophistication.
Looking ahead to continued success
A handover ceremony is scheduled for this summer in Ravenna to celebrate the significant collaboration between the two companies, both of which are deeply rooted in family tradition. "This milestone LHM 600 exemplifies our commitment to delivering innovative solutions for our customers," remarked Andreas Ritschel, General Manager of Sales for mobile harbour cranes at Liebherr-Rostock GmbH.

By integrating the crane into their logistics network, Marcegaglia will enhance process efficiency and align with the company’s strategic objectives. With the support of Liebherr’s global service network, they will also benefit from consistent maintenance and assistance for their new crane. Ultimately, the LHM 600 represents the synergy between two industry leaders, advancing together with a shared dedication to excellence.
