Sarens Supports Piling Works at Miri CCGT Power Plant in Sarawak

30 Second Takeaway

The Miri Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) Power Plant in Sarawak, Malaysia, is set to deliver 500MW of base-load electricity when it becomes operational in 2027. Supporting the project on behalf of Intercargo Machinery, Sarens provided heavy lifting expertise during critical piling operations, deploying SCC2000 and QUY70 crawler cranes to handle a 12-ton vibratory hammer under challenging ground and weather conditions.

Base-Load Power Supporting Energy Transition

As regions expand renewable energy capacity, stable base-load power plants remain essential to ensure grid reliability. Combined cycle gas turbine plants play a key role by delivering high-efficiency power generation with significantly lower emissions than coal or diesel-fired alternatives.

In Malaysia, projects such as the Miri CCGT Power Plant are designed to strengthen energy security while supporting the transition toward a lower-carbon energy mix.

Power Plant Development in Sarawak

Developed by PETROS Power, a subsidiary of Sarawak’s state-owned oil and gas company, the Miri CCGT Power Plant will provide 500MW of stable electricity to support households and industry across the region.

Once operational in 2027, the plant will function as a reliable base-load facility, complementing renewable energy generation and ensuring continuity of supply during periods of variable output from wind or solar sources.

Sarens’ Role in Critical Piling Operations

Sarens is supporting the project on behalf of its client Intercargo Machinery, delivering heavy lifting services during key piling activities at the site.

As part of its scope, Sarens was responsible for handling a 12-ton vibratory hammer used for both pile installation and extraction. Following a detailed site survey, Sarens’ engineering team selected the SCC2000 and QUY70 crawler cranes for the operation.

The cranes were chosen for their:

  • Stability under heavy dynamic loads

  • Suitable lifting capacity for vibratory hammer operations

  • Ability to operate safely on soft ground conditions when positioned on mats

Equipment Mobilisation and Site Execution

The selected equipment was transported from the Sarens Malaysia yard to the project site within two days, demonstrating rapid mobilisation capability. Despite limited space and challenging ground conditions, crane assembly was completed within one and a half days.

Lifting operations were carried out with controlled movements to maintain precise alignment and ensure safety throughout the piling process. A dedicated team of operators, assemblers and supervisors coordinated closely to execute the works efficiently.

Managing Weather and Site Constraints

The piling works were carried out in an environment affected by frequent rainfall and restricted operating areas due to ongoing construction activities nearby. Despite these constraints, Sarens completed its scope within the agreed project timeline.

Careful planning, disciplined execution and close coordination with site stakeholders were key to maintaining safety and productivity under changing conditions.

High-Efficiency Power Generation

Once operational, the Miri CCGT Power Plant will achieve efficiencies of over 60% by capturing and reusing waste heat from the gas turbines to generate additional electricity. This approach allows the plant to produce more power with less fuel, significantly reducing CO₂ emissions compared to conventional coal or diesel-fired power plants.
