BAJ Freight Expands Fleet with Ghana’s First Liebherr LTM 1100-5.3

30-Second Takeaway

BAJ Freight and Logistics continues expanding its lifting capabilities with the addition of a new Liebherr LTM 1100-5.3. The 100 tonne All Terrain crane introduces Liebherr’s latest Liccon3 control system to Ghana and will support smaller lifting operations while improving fleet efficiency across industrial sectors.

BAJ Freight Takes Delivery of Ghana’s First Liebherr LTM 1100-5.3

Ghanaian heavy lift and logistics company BAJ Freight and Logistics has purchased a new 100 tonne Liebherr LTM 1100-5.3 All Terrain crane as part of its ongoing fleet expansion strategy. The new crane becomes the first mobile crane in Ghana equipped with Liebherr’s latest Liccon3 crane control system, marking another step forward in the company’s investment in modern lifting technology.

The five axle crane joins an existing fleet of Liebherr All Terrain cranes at BAJ, which already includes:

  • A 300 tonne unit

  • A 220 tonne unit

  • A 150 tonne unit

Advanced Five Axle All Terrain Crane

The Liebherr LTM 1100-5.3 features a seven section 62 metre main boom combined with a 9.5 to 16 metre bi-fold swingaway extension that can be offset up to 40 degrees.

This configuration provides a maximum tip height of approximately 68 metres, giving the crane flexibility across a wide range of lifting applications.

The crane is also equipped with several of Liebherr’s advanced operational technologies, including:

  • Liccon3 crane control system

  • VarioBase variable outrigger system

  • VarioBallast counterweight system

  • Stage V diesel engine

The crane can carry up to 16.9 tonnes of counterweight while remaining within 12 tonne axle load limits and maintains an overall transport width of just 2.55 metres.

Supporting Fleet Utilization and Operational Efficiency

According to BAJ Freight and Logistics chief executive Joseph Biney, the new crane fills an important gap within the company’s fleet structure.

“With our new LTM 1100-5.3, we are filling a gap below the existing capacity models. It will handle smaller lifting tasks in future, thereby taking the strain off the larger units in the fleet.”

Biney explained that the company’s larger cranes currently operate at very high utilization levels, making additional fleet support essential.

“The utilisation rate of our three larger cranes is very high - any downtime represents a significant strain for us. The high product quality and reliable local service made the decision to invest in a fourth Liebherr crane an easy one.”

First Liccon3 Mobile Crane in Ghana

The new crane also introduces Liebherr’s latest generation Liccon3 control system to the Ghanaian market.

Biney highlighted the importance of the crane’s safety systems and advanced technology features.

“The LTM 1100-5.3 impressed us with its high safety standards. Furthermore, it is equipped with the new Liccon3 crane control system and will be the first mobile crane of this generation in Ghana.”

The crane’s primary applications will include:

  • Port logistics operations

  • Mining projects

  • Oil & gas sector lifting work

  • Industrial installations

BAJ says the crane complements its broader logistics and transportation operations, allowing the company to offer integrated project support from equipment delivery through onsite installation.

“The new crane’s main areas of application will be in port logistics and in projects for the mining and oil & gas industries. Combined with the transport and logistics services we provide, this creates a comprehensive range of services from delivery to on-site installation.”

Importance of Local Service and Support

In addition to product performance and crane technology, BAJ emphasized the importance of Liebherr’s local support capabilities in Ghana.

“In addition to product quality, other factors for this renewed investment in a Liebherr crane included the high availability and local service provided by Liebherr in Ghana, which is essential for smooth operation.”

Reliable local service support continues playing a major role in fleet investment decisions across Africa’s growing crane and heavy lift sectors, particularly for companies supporting infrastructure, energy, mining, and industrial projects.
