Concord Cranes takes Africa’s first Liebherr LTM 1400-6.1
30 Second Takeaway
Concord Cranes has taken delivery of Africa’s first Liebherr LTM 1400-6.1, a six-axle all-terrain crane with a 450-tonne maximum capacity. Its 70-metre telescopic boom can be extended to lifting heights of up to 120 metres, depending on configuration. The crane has already worked on port operations, bridge construction and infrastructure projects in South Africa. It replaces Concord’s LTM 1400-7.1, which had served the company for many years.

First LTM 1400-6.1 in Africa
South African crane hire company Concord Cranes is the first in Africa to add the LTM 1400-6.1 to its fleet. The crane was delivered in February 2026 and has since been deployed on several projects.
Concord CEO Wayne McCullagh said the new crane was selected as the successor to the company’s LTM 1400-7.1. The previous crane had provided reliable service for many years and was due for replacement.
450-tonne capacity on a six-axle carrier
The LTM 1400-6.1 combines a 450-tonne maximum lifting capacity with a 70-metre telescopic boom on a six-axle all-terrain carrier. Depending on its configuration, it can achieve lifting heights of up to 120 metres.
Its equipment package includes 140 tonnes of ballast and Liebherr’s Y-guying system. VarioBallast allows the ballast radius to be adjusted, while VarioBase supports variable outrigger positioning. Together, these features allow the crane to be configured for different lifts and site conditions.
The six-axle carrier also gives the crane the mobility to travel between different work applications without the mobilisation requirements associated with larger crawler or lattice-boom cranes.
Working across ports, bridges and infrastructure
Since its delivery, Concord’s LTM 1400-6.1 has worked on port operations, bridge construction and infrastructure projects. Liebherr-Africa reported positive feedback on the crane’s combination of lifting capacity, reach and mobility.
The crane’s reach and lifting capacity suit applications where it must position loads at height, while the all-terrain carrier allows it to be moved between projects. Its boom, ballast and Y-guying system can be configured around the requirements of each lift.
Liebherr-Africa supports the crane through its lifecycle
Liebherr-Africa will provide commissioning support, operator and technical training, diagnostics, technical assistance and planned maintenance. Concord will also have access to Liebherr’s local service and spare-parts infrastructure.
Hendrik Burger, Sales Manager Mobile Cranes at Liebherr-Africa, said the delivery brings the latest generation of Liebherr large all-terrain crane technology to the African market. He also noted the importance of matching the crane specification to Concord’s target applications and transport requirements.
