Restoration Begins at a Landmark Italian Fortress

Restoration and redevelopment work has officially commenced at the Rocca di Varano, a treasured historic fortress located in Camerino, within Italy’s Marche Region.

The project is being led by the Municipality of Camerino, with support from the Marche

Regional Government, and aims to restore the fortress—closed to the public since the 2016 earthquake and reopen it as a cultural and community landmark.

Potain Igo T 99 Selected for Challenging Terrain

To support the construction works, Potain distributor Gavarini Macchine has supplied a Potain Igo T 99 self-erecting tower crane on rental to COGEN Costruzioni Generali, the contractor responsible for the restoration.

The crane was selected for its ability to combine compact dimensions with high lifting performance, making it well suited to the site’s unique constraints.

Key performance characteristics include:

  • Lifting capacities of 1,500 to 1,900 kg

  • Operating heights of 40 to 45 metres

  • A footprint suitable for limited access and steep hillside conditions

These features allow efficient material handling while minimising disruption to the surrounding historic environment.

Complex Logistics and Site Access

Accessing the Rocca di Varano site presented significant logistical challenges. The route involved a narrow, two-kilometre country path with soft soil conditions, requiring careful planning and specialist transport solutions.

To overcome these constraints, a self-propelled Gapo vehicle was used to transport and position the tower crane. This solution enabled precise manoeuvring in confined spaces and avoided potential delays that could have arisen from restricted access and limited turning areas.

Preserving Cultural Heritage Through Modern Lifting Solutions

The restoration project represents an important step in preserving Italy’s cultural heritage while supporting the recovery of communities affected by seismic events.

By combining modern lifting technology with careful logistical planning, the project team is ensuring that the Rocca di Varano can be safely restored and reopened for future generations.
