Delden adds 400-tonne Liebherr LR 1400 SX as new flagship
30-Second Takeaway
Delden has taken delivery of a 400-tonne Liebherr LR 1400 SX crawler crane, becoming its new flagship. The Nottinghamshire rental company says its focus remains long-term crane hire rather than pursuing ever-larger heavy-lift projects. Designed for transport and self-assembly, the LR 1400 SX uses hydraulically installed and locked pins and has tracks that extend from 4.8 to 8.4 metres wide. Its choice of fixed or luffing jibs can provide a maximum system length of 178 metres. The new crane also shares luffing jib components with Delden’s LR 1300.1 SX, allowing equipment to be used across both machines.

New flagship, with long-term hire at the core
The LR 1400 SX is the largest crane in Delden’s fleet. Managing director Sean Nyland said the company plans to keep serving its established customers and core markets through long-term crane hire, rather than chasing larger heavy-lift projects.
“We are not a company that wants to chase ever larger heavy lift projects or step outside our key market of long term crane hire. We know our customer base and our core markets, and we will continue to serve this sector to the best of our ability, working with many long standing customers and delivering the high levels of service and reliability they have come to expect.”
Designed for transport and self-assembly
The LR 1400 SX was designed to be relatively straightforward to transport and can self-assemble once on site. Its pins are installed and locked hydraulically, reducing the need for separate manual pinning during assembly. The crawler tracks retract to an overall width of 4.8 metres for transport and extend to a maximum width of 8.4 metres for operation. Each track has two drive motors, giving the crane four in total. A choice of fixed or luffing jibs, each up to 113 metres, gives the crane a maximum system length of 178 metres. Its control system can also adjust the load chart to account for barge tilt angles.
Shared jib components with Delden’s LR 1300.1 SX
The LR 1400 SX shares luffing jib components and sections with Delden’s 300-tonne Liebherr LR 1300.1 SX. That compatibility allows the company to share equipment between the two crawler cranes. Delden took delivery of the LR 1300.1 SX and three 160-tonne LR 1160.1 crawler cranes in 2025, the year it marked its 50th anniversary. Earlier this year, it added its fifth 150-tonne Liebherr LTR 1150 telescopic crawler crane.
