30-Second Takeaway

Australian rental company MCG Cranes has taken delivery of its first Franna, a 40-tonne AT40-2 pick-and-carry crane. The three-axle crane has an articulated chassis and a four-section boom extending to 19.8 metres. It can lift its maximum capacity at a 1.1-metre radius and handle three tonnes at the full 15.8-metre radius with the boom horizontal. MCG’s new crane is based at the company’s recently built depot in Thomastown, Victoria. Founded in 2006 with a single mobile crane, MCG now operates a large fleet of tower and mobile cranes.

First Franna joins MCG’s fleet

The AT40-2 is MCG Cranes’ first Franna. The 40-tonne pick-and-carry crane combines an articulated chassis with a three-axle design, allowing it to travel with a load rather than relying solely on lifting from a fixed position.

Its four-section main boom extends to 19.8 metres, with a maximum tip height of 20 metres. The crane can lift its full rated capacity at a 1.1-metre radius and a height of six metres. At full boom length, it can lift three tonnes at its maximum 15.8-metre radius with the boom horizontal.

Dimensions and road performance

The AT40-2 is just over 2.7 metres wide and 3.65 metres high, with an overall chassis length of 8.43 metres. Including the boom overhang, its overall travel length is just under 11 metres.

Power comes from a Mercedes diesel engine linked to a six-speed Allison transmission. The crane has an overall weight of 30,300 kg and a maximum road speed of 80 km/h (50 mph).
