Grove Upgrades GMK6400-1 to GMK6450-1 with Increased 450-Tonne Capacity

Updated: Jan 12

30 Second Takeaway

Grove has upgraded its GMK6400-1 all-terrain crane to the GMK 6450-1, increasing maximum lifting capacity to 450 tonnes. The renaming reflects the crane’s true performance capabilities, driven by customer demand and enabled by technologies such as MAXbase™ variable outrigger positioning and MegaWingLift™, which significantly enhance lifting performance within a six-axle configuration.

Model Upgrade Reflects Increased Lifting Performance

The Grove GMK6400-1 has been upgraded to the GMK6450-1, carrying an increased maximum lifting capacity of 450 tonnes, representing a 50-tonne increase over the previous model.

Despite the upgrade, the crane retains its position as the strongest all-terrain crane available on six axles. The model renaming was implemented to more accurately reflect the crane’s true lifting capabilities following performance enhancements introduced in recent years.

Customer Demand Drives Model Renaming

According to Grove, the decision to rename the crane was driven by feedback from customers worldwide who recognised that the original model designation no longer reflected its performance.

“Over the past two years, we have seen a growing demand for a name change from our global customer base. We reviewed the crane’s performance, which resulted in a new model, the GMK6450-1,” explained Andreas Cremer, Vice President Product and Project Management for Mobile Cranes at Manitowoc.

MAXbase™ and MegaWingLift™ Redefine Six-Axle Capability

The introduction of MAXbase™ variable outrigger positioning on the GMK6400-1 in 2021 allowed customers to further capitalise on the crane’s strong baseline performance.

MAXbase™ enables asymmetrical outrigger configurations, delivering enhanced load charts and greater flexibility on constrained job sites. The system can also be used in conjunction with MegaWingLift™, a capacity-increasing, self-rigging attachment that can be deployed in less than 20 minutes without the need for an assist crane.

Together, these technologies deliver:

  • Up to 70% increased lifting capacity on the main boom

  • Up to 400% increased lifting capacity when using the luffing jib

These performance gains were a key factor behind customer requests to rename the crane to better reflect its real-world capabilities.

Segment-Leading Performance Across Heavy Lift Applications

The Grove GMK6450-1 delivers segment-leading lifting performance and has been used on projects traditionally requiring seven-axle or even eight-axle all-terrain cranes.

Performance examples include:

  • 8.9 tonnes lifted at radii between 38 m and 50 m using a full 136 m boom and jib system

  • 12.8 tonnes lifted at distances between 36 m and 52 m with 120 m of boom and jib

Designed for Wind Energy and High-Reach Projects

The GMK 6450-1 is particularly well suited to wind power projects, where flexible setup distances and steep vertical lifting angles are critical.

When equipped with its 79 m luffing jib, the crane is capable of lifting in wind speeds of up to 9 m/s, supporting demanding wind turbine installation and maintenance operations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why was the GMK6400-1 renamed to the GMK6450-1?

The renaming reflects a reassessment of the crane’s actual lifting performance following the introduction of MAXbase™ and MegaWingLift™, which significantly increased lifting capacity beyond what the original model designation suggested.

What makes the GMK6450-1 the strongest six-axle all-terrain crane?

With a 450-tonne maximum capacity, enhanced load charts, and advanced outrigger and lifting technologies, the GMK6450-1 delivers performance levels typically associated with larger, higher-axle-count cranes.

How does MAXbase™ improve lifting performance in real-world applications?

MAXbase™ allows asymmetrical outrigger setups, enabling operators to optimise crane positioning in restricted spaces while maintaining higher lifting capacities than conventional outrigger configurations.

What role does MegaWingLift™ play in increasing capacity?

MegaWingLift™ increases structural stiffness in the superstructure, allowing substantial gains in lifting capacity up to 70% on the main boom and 400% with a luffing jib without increasing axle count.

Why is the GMK6450-1 used in place of larger axle-count cranes?

Its combination of high lifting capacity, extended boom and jib configurations, and transport efficiency allows it to perform lifts traditionally assigned to seven- or eight-axle cranes, reducing transport complexity.

Which industries benefit most from the GMK6450-1’s capabilities?

The crane is well suited to wind energy, infrastructure, industrial construction, and high-reach heavy lifting projects requiring flexible setup and strong lifting performance.
