Liebherr LPS 420 Drives Export Efficiency at Nuh Çimento’s Hereke Port

30 Second Takeaway

Nuh Çimento has strengthened its export-driven logistics chain with the installation of a Liebherr LPS 420 portal crane at its private port in Hereke, Türkiye. The electrically driven crane replaces a legacy unit dating back to 1999, delivering improved throughput, lower emissions and enhanced reliability for high-volume clinker and cement exports to more than 40 countries.

Strengthening Export Logistics at Hereke

Nuh Çimento has reinforced its maritime logistics operations with the deployment of a Liebherr LPS 420 portal crane at its private port in Hereke, located along the Gulf of İzmit.

The terminal serves as a critical export gateway for the cement producer, handling high-volume clinker and cement shipments to more than 40 international markets. The new crane supports continuous bulk handling operations, helping reduce vessel turnaround times and increase overall port productivity.

Electric Portal Crane Performance

Designed for Abrasive Bulk Materials

The electrically driven LPS 420 delivers reduced fuel consumption, lower emissions and quieter operation compared to diesel-powered alternatives. This makes it particularly well suited to terminals operating under increasingly strict environmental regulations.

Equipped with Liebherr’s closed hydraulic slewing system and advanced Litronic control platform, the crane provides smooth rotational movement, precise load control and optimised cycle times. These capabilities are essential for handling abrasive materials such as clinker and cement efficiently and consistently.

A Generational Transition

Replacing a Historic Crane Installation

The installation of the LPS 420 marks a generational shift for the Hereke port. It replaces an LPS 400 that had been in service since 1999, which was notably the first portal slewing crane ever delivered by Liebherr.

After more than two decades of operation and increasing maintenance demands, Nuh Çimento selected the LPS 420 to ensure long-term operational continuity and higher efficiency. Installation was completed on schedule under Liebherr supervision, with the customer highlighting the intuitive operation and smooth commissioning process.

Infrastructure Supporting High Throughput

Built for Continuous Export Operations

The port’s infrastructure is designed to maximise the crane’s high-throughput capabilities. Facilities include a 595-metre berth capable of accommodating vessels of up to 80,000 DWT, along with a 300-metre underground conveyor system that enables rapid cargo transfer between storage areas and vessel loading points.

This integrated setup supports Nuh Çimento’s round-the-clock shipping schedule and export-focused logistics strategy.

Sustainability and Operational Resilience

Preparing for the Future

Beyond productivity improvements, the electric drive system strengthens compliance with evolving environmental regulations and helps mitigate rising energy costs.

Ongoing support from Liebherr’s regional service network remains a key factor in ensuring crane availability, reliability and long-term performance at the port.

Industry Perspective

Long-Standing Partnership

Andreas Ritschel, General Manager Sales Mobile Harbour Cranes at Liebherr-Rostock GmbH, said:

“This project reflects the strength of our long-standing partnership. The LPS 420 delivers a future-ready solution aligned with Nuh Çimento’s operational and sustainability goals.”
