Gustav Seeland Adds Grove GMK6450-1 as New Flagship Crane in Hamburg Fleet

Updated: Jan 2

30-Second Takeaway

Hamburg-based logistics and crane rental company Gustav Seeland has expanded its lifting capabilities with the addition of a Grove GMK6450-1 all-terrain crane, now the largest and strongest crane in its fleet. The 450-tonne crane supports the company’s continued growth across heavy transport, crane rental, and industrial assembly projects.

New Flagship Crane Supports Business Growth

Grove continues to support customers as they expand their operations, and for Hamburg, Germany–based Gustav Seeland, this has meant investing in a crane capable of handling larger and more complex lifting challenges.

The company has taken delivery of a class-leading Grove GMK6450-1 all-terrain crane, which has become the largest and strongest crane in Seeland’s fleet. The delivery marks a significant milestone as the company continues to grow across multiple business divisions.

Confidence Built on Previous Grove Performance

Seeland’s latest acquisition was completed in September 2023, following the company’s purchase of a Grove GMK5250XL-1 in September the previous year. At the time, the GMK5250XL-1 was the largest crane in Seeland’s fleet.

Strong performance from the GMK5250XL-1 gave the company the confidence to step up to the GMK6450-1, reinforcing Grove’s role in Seeland’s fleet development strategy.

Managing Director Highlights Customer Demand

Commenting on the investment, Johann Evers, Managing Director at Gustav Seeland, said:

“Our business is growing in all divisions, and our Grove cranes have played a key role in helping us advance. By investing in the GMK6450-1, we can support our loyal customers with even more capability. We’ve already seen very strong interest in the new crane.”

Multi-Department Evaluation and Factory Inspection

Given the importance of the investment, Seeland involved a wide cross-section of its organisation in the selection process, including management, sales, scheduling, and crane operators.

The evaluation included a detailed inspection at Manitowoc’s Wilhelmshaven facility in Germany, where Grove all-terrain cranes are manufactured. After comparing the GMK6450-1 with other cranes on the market, Seeland selected the model for its class-leading strength, fast and convenient assembly, and its unique market position.

According to Evers, the GMK6450-1 has “no comparable competitors.”

450-Tonne Capacity Across Diverse Business Areas

The Grove GMK6450-1 will be deployed across all areas of Seeland’s operations, including heavy transport, specialised transport, crane rental, industrial assembly, and engineering.

The crane delivers a maximum capacity of 450 tonnes, with lifting capacities of:

  • Up to 64 tonnes on the 60-metre main boom

  • Up to 9 tonnes at the maximum lifting height of 132 metres

Despite its performance, the GMK6450-1 maintains a compact design, supporting deployment on a wide range of job sites.

Transport Flexibility and Rapid Setup

To improve transport efficiency, Seeland specified a boom removal configuration, allowing axle loads to be reduced to their lowest level when minimal transport weight is required.

The crane is also equipped with the MegaWingLift™, a capacity-enhancing, self-rigging system that enables setup in under 20 minutes and equally fast dismantling. This rapid assembly and teardown capability was a key factor in Seeland’s purchasing decision, as it improves efficiency across time-critical projects.

Manitowoc Highlights Long-Term Partnership

Holger Haber, Manitowoc’s Area Sales Manager for Northern Germany, commented on the delivery:

“We’re thrilled to share in Seeland’s growth into the heavy-lifting segment with the purchase of our new Grove GMK6450-1. This purchase reflects the strong relationship and trust between our two companies. We will continue to push the limits of what’s possible and create new cranes that can help our customers continue to excel in the lifting industry.”
