Henneberger Adds Liebherr LTM 1100-5.3 for Flexible Taxi Crane Operations

30-Second Takeaway

German crane and heavy transport specialist Henneberger Schwerlast has taken delivery of its first Liebherr crane with LICCON3 controls. The new LTM 1100-5.3 combines 100-tonne capacity, a 62-metre telescopic boom and a 2.55-metre carrier width. It will support industrial construction, machinery relocation and electricity and radio mast erection across the company’s operating region.

First LICCON3 Crane for Henneberger

Henneberger Schwerlast has taken delivery of a 100-tonne Liebherr LTM 1100-5.3 all-terrain crane, adding a five-axle machine suited to its day-to-day lifting work. The company selected the crane for its narrow carrier and ability to transport a substantial counterweight package within 12-tonne axle loads. It is the first crane in Henneberger’s fleet equipped with Liebherr’s LICCON3 control system. The handover took place at Liebherr’s facility in Ehingen, Germany.

Inside the Liebherr LTM 1100-5.3

The LTM 1100-5.3 features a seven-section telescopic main boom extending to 62 metres. Its reported equipment includes a 9.5 to 16-metre bi-fold swingaway extension, which can be offset up to 40 degrees. Liebherr lists the model’s maximum hoist height at 76 metres and maximum working radius at 64 metres. Its maximum rated lifting capacity is 100 tonnes at a three-metre radius, while the full counterweight package totals 22.5 tonnes. These maximum figures apply to different operating configurations.

The long main boom provides reach for industrial structures and mast work, while the swingaway extension adds configuration options for assignments requiring additional height. The crane also features a Stage V diesel engine and Liebherr’s VarioBase and VarioBallast systems.

Onboard Counterweight Supports Taxi Crane Work

The ability to carry up to 16.9 tonnes of counterweight at 12-tonne axle loads was a central factor in Henneberger’s purchase. For jobs within the capability of that onboard configuration, the crane can mobilise without a separate vehicle carrying additional ballast. This helps simplify transport arrangements and reduces the number of vehicles required for an assignment.

Company owner Mario Henneberger said:

“We can use the LTM 1100-5.3 very flexibly as a ‘taxi crane’, as it can carry a large proportion of its counterweight whilst within 12 tonnes axle loads, allowing us to carry out many of the jobs we do without having to use a separate vehicle for transporting the ballast.”

Narrow Carrier for Regional Roads and Site Access

The LTM 1100-5.3 has an overall carrier width of 2.55 metres, an important consideration for Henneberger’s work on narrow roads and restricted approaches. The company operates in Thuringia, Bavaria and Hesse, where mobilisation can involve different road-permit requirements and routes with bridge weight restrictions.

“The lightweight design of the LTM 1100-5.3 makes it easier for us to obtain road permits - even across federal states, as we operate in Thuringia, as well as in Bavaria and Hesse,” Henneberger said.
“We can even reduce the axle loads to less than nine tonnes and a gross vehicle weight under 45 tonnes, which can be an advantage on bridge weight restrictions.”

These reduced-weight arrangements require a different transport configuration from the one carrying 16.9 tonnes of counterweight.

Variable Setup with VarioBase and VarioBallast

VarioBase allows the crane’s outriggers to extend individually to suit the available working area. Permissible lifting capacities depend on the actual support configuration and working direction. VarioBallast provides two counterweight radius settings. The smaller radius reduces the space required behind the superstructure, while the larger radius increases counterweight leverage.

Together, the systems provide options for configuring the crane around site access, setup space and lifting requirements.

RemoteDrive and Boom Camera Support Operator Visibility

Henneberger’s new crane also includes RemoteDrive, allowing the operator to manoeuvre the carrier from outside the driving cab using radio remote control. The company highlighted the feature’s value on confined construction sites, where an operator can choose a position offering a clearer view of nearby obstacles. The crane is also equipped with a boom camera. It is Henneberger’s third machine with this feature, joining its Liebherr LTM 1250-5.1 and LTM 1300-6.3.

Industrial Construction, Machinery and Mast Work

Henneberger plans to deploy the LTM 1100-5.3 on industrial building construction, machinery relocation and electricity and radio mast erection. The crane’s combination of main-boom reach, narrow carrier width and onboard ballast capability supports a range of regional assignments, particularly where mobilisation and access are significant parts of the job.
