IPAF Supports Back to Basics Safety Campaign Across Ireland

30 Second Takeaway

The International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) is taking part in the Construction Industry Federation’s Back to Basics safety campaign, running across Ireland until 24 October. During the campaign, IPAF is delivering site visits and safety talks focused on work at height using aerial work platforms, reinforcing fundamental safety principles across the Irish construction sector.

Reinforcing Core Safety Principles

Construction remains one of the highest-risk industries, with work at height continuing to be a leading cause of serious injuries and fatalities. Industry-wide safety campaigns play a critical role in reinforcing basic principles that, when consistently applied, significantly reduce risk on site.

The Back to Basics campaign aligns with European Safety Week, emphasising the importance of returning to core health and safety practices rather than relying solely on advanced systems or procedures.

IPAF’s Role in the Campaign

As part of the two-week campaign, IPAF is conducting site visits and safety talks with contractors across Ireland. These sessions focus specifically on the safe use of mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) and related work-at-height activities.

The campaign was launched with Damien O’Connor, IPAF’s Irish Country Manager, leading day one activities at the Walls Construction and O’Flynn site in Dublin.

Key Safety Topics Covered

During site engagements, IPAF is addressing a range of essential safety topics, including:

  • Ground conditions

  • Correct machine selection

  • Pre-use inspections

  • Operator and spotter familiarisation

  • Safe operation practices

  • Effective supervision

  • Emergency and rescue planning

These topics are designed to reinforce safe behaviour at every stage of MEWP operation, from planning through to execution.

Safety Starts with the Basics

Damien O’Connor emphasised the importance of focusing on core principles:

“Safety starts on the ground. Whether operating an aerial work platform, managing a worksite or supervising teams, attention to the basics can prevent serious injuries and help save lives.”

The message underlines the campaign’s objective: preventing incidents by ensuring fundamental safety steps are consistently applied.

Supporting Industry Awareness

As part of the campaign, IPAF has published a safety leaflet available via its Back to Basics campaign page, providing accessible guidance to support contractors, operators and supervisors throughout the construction sector.
