Liebherr LR 1700-1.0 Reaches 126 Metres in Wind Farm Debut in Turkey.

Updated: Jan 1

30-Second Takeaway

Sarılar Group has placed its newly delivered Liebherr LR 1700-1.0 crawler crane into service on a wind farm project near Isparta, Turkey. Equipped with a 126-metre lattice boom, the crane demonstrated its capability to support modern wind turbine installation. The LR 1700-1.0 was selected for its flexibility across Turkey’s wind sector and its component compatibility with Sarılar’s existing Liebherr crawler crane fleet.

Wind Farm Debut Near Isparta

Sarılar Group has successfully completed the first deployment of its new Liebherr LR 1700-1.0 crawler crane at a wind farm near Isparta, marking an important milestone for the company’s renewable energy operations.

Configured with a 126-metre-long lattice boom, the crane met the height, reach, and lifting demands required for modern wind turbine construction. The project highlighted the LR 1700-1.0’s suitability for wind farm environments, where long reach, stable lifting performance, and efficient setup are critical.

Why Sarılar Selected the LR 1700-1.0

Sarılar Group selected the LR 1700-1.0 for its versatility in assembling wind turbines across a wide range of hub heights and site conditions throughout Turkey.

A key advantage is the crane’s compatibility with components from other Liebherr crawler cranes already in Sarılar’s fleet. Boom sections from the LR 1600 series can also be used on the LR 1700-1.0, allowing Sarılar to optimize logistics, reduce transport requirements, and maximize the use of existing equipment.

This interoperability supports faster mobilization between wind projects and improves overall fleet efficiency.

Transport Efficiency Meets Heavy-Lift Performance

The Liebherr LR 1700-1.0 bridges the gap between traditional 600-tonne class crawler cranes and higher-capacity 750-tonne class lattice boom cranes.

By combining cost-efficient transport with increased lifting performance, the crane is well suited for wind energy, infrastructure, and industrial installation projects. Built on the dimensions of the LR 1600/2, the LR 1700-1.0 delivers significantly higher lifting capacities while maintaining compatibility with existing components.

This design approach allows contractors to scale lifting capability without increasing transport complexity or operating costs.

Engineering Enhancements and Derrick System

At the core of the LR 1700-1.0 is a newly developed base machine offering up to 15 percent greater lifting capacity compared to previous designs.

The crawler carriers feature reinforced structural steel, while enlarged rollers reduce wear during travel and repositioning. A standard four-way drive system improves maneuverability when moving the crane on site.

The crane’s modern derrick system integrates Liebherr’s V-frame®, VarioTray®, and M-Wagon® modular ballast trailer. The M-Wagon® system is compatible not only with the LR 1700-1.0 but also with the LR 1800-1.0 and LR 11000, allowing standardized ballast handling across multiple crane classes.

Supporting Wind Energy Growth in Turkey

As Turkey continues to expand its renewable energy capacity, cranes capable of handling taller hub heights and heavier turbine components are increasingly in demand.

The successful deployment of the LR 1700-1.0 near Isparta positions Sarılar Group to support future wind energy projects with greater reach, flexibility, and lifting performance. The crane’s first project confirms its readiness for large-scale renewable construction, where precision, safety, and reliability are essential.

Frequently Asked Questions

What was the significance of this project for Sarılar Group?

This project marked the first operational deployment of Sarılar Group’s newly delivered Liebherr LR 1700-1.0 crawler crane. Successfully completing the crane’s inaugural lift at a wind farm near Isparta validated the crane’s performance and confirmed its readiness for large-scale renewable energy projects across Turkey.

Why was a 126-metre boom required for this wind farm installation?

Modern wind turbines continue to increase in hub height and component size. The 126-metre lattice boom provided the necessary hook height and reach to safely handle turbine components while maintaining stable lifting geometry, particularly in wind farm environments where precision and control are critical.

What makes the Liebherr LR 1700-1.0 well suited for wind energy projects?

The LR 1700-1.0 is designed to balance transport efficiency and high lifting performance. Its modular boom system, strong load charts, and advanced derrick configuration allow it to adapt to varying turbine heights and site conditions. This flexibility makes it a strong fit for wind projects that require frequent relocation between sites.

How does component compatibility benefit crane owners like Sarılar Group?

The LR 1700-1.0 can utilize boom sections and components from the Liebherr LR 1600 series, allowing Sarılar Group to share equipment across multiple cranes. This reduces transport requirements, simplifies logistics, lowers operating costs, and improves fleet utilization across different projects.

What improvements were made to the base machine compared to earlier models?

The LR 1700-1.0 features a newly reinforced base machine with up to 15 percent greater lifting capacity. Enhanced crawler carriers, larger rollers, and a standard four-way drive system improve durability, mobility, and overall performance during both lifting operations and site travel.

What role does the derrick system play in the crane’s performance?

The crane’s derrick system, including the V-frame®, VarioTray®, and M-Wagon®, provides increased stability and lifting capacity for heavy and long-reach configurations. The modular ballast system also improves efficiency during setup and dismantling, especially on wind farm projects where crane configurations frequently change.

How does this crane support Turkey’s renewable energy growth?

As wind farms expand across Turkey, cranes capable of handling taller turbines and heavier components are essential. The LR 1700-1.0 gives Sarılar Group the capability to support next-generation wind installations, helping accelerate renewable energy development while maintaining high safety and precision standards.

What industries beyond wind energy can the LR 1700-1.0 serve?

In addition to wind energy, the LR 1700-1.0 is suitable for infrastructure projects, industrial construction, heavy installation work, and complex lifting operations where long reach and high lifting capacity are required.
