T3 Projects Expands African Mining Fleet With Three Liebherr Cranes

Updated: Jan 1

30-Second Takeaway

T3 Projects has taken delivery of three new Liebherr cranes an LTM 1300-6.3, LRT 1100-2.1, and LRT 1130-2.1 to support large-scale mining and infrastructure projects across Africa. The fleet expansion strengthens the company’s heavy-lift capacity, improves mobility in remote sites, and reinforces its focus on safety, reliability, and high-performance lifting in harsh operating environments.

T3 Projects has successfully taken delivery of three Liebherr cranes: the LTM 1300-6.3, LRT 1100-2.1, and LRT 1130-2.1.

T3 Projects has successfully taken delivery of three Liebherr cranes: the LTM 1300-6.3, LRT 1100-2.1, and LRT 1130-2.1, marking a significant fleet expansion aimed at supporting mining and infrastructure projects across the African continent.

In response to increasing project size, complexity, and lift demands, the South African-based contractor selected Liebherr’s mobile and rough terrain crane platforms for their proven durability, advanced safety systems, and ability to perform in remote and demanding environments.

The two rough terrain cranes the LRT 1100-2.1 and LRT 1130-2.1  are specifically configured for off-road operations typical of mining sites, while the 300-tonne LTM 1300-6.3 adds high-capacity lifting capability for structural assembly, heavy material handling, and precision hoisting.

Built for Africa’s Mining Conditions

T3 Projects specializes in mining and infrastructure projects from planning through erection and commissioning, employing more than 900 professionals across South Africa, Mozambique, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, and Burkina Faso.

According to Richard van den Barg, Managing Director of T3 Projects, the new cranes open doors to work that was previously out of reach.

“The addition of these new cranes marks a substantial expansion of our existing fleet, opening up new avenues for high-capacity hoisting tasks that our current equipment cannot accommodate.”

The LRT 1100-2.1 features a telescopic boom extending to 50 metres, while the LRT 1130-2.1 offers a 130-tonne lifting capacity and a 60-metre telescopic boom. Both cranes are equipped with VarioBase®, allowing flexible outrigger configurations a key advantage when working on uneven or confined mining sites.

Reliability, Safety, and Service Support

Donovan Carroll, Operations Director at T3 Projects, emphasized that equipment reliability and service support were decisive factors in selecting Liebherr.

“Our choice of Liebherr cranes is driven by their established reputation for reliability and durability. Their rapid service response, maintenance packages, and spare parts availability significantly reduce downtime.”

Liebherr’s remote diagnostics systems allow service teams to access crane control data remotely, enabling faster troubleshooting and minimizing delays caused by site access challenges a critical benefit for operations in isolated locations.

The LRT cranes’ advanced safety systems, combined with user-friendly operation, support T3 Projects’ commitment to safe and efficient lifting across all projects.

Flagship Capacity With the LTM 1300-6.3

The LTM 1300-6.3 becomes a flagship unit in the T3 Projects fleet. This six-axle, 300-tonne mobile crane can operate with a 90-metre telescopic boom while maintaining an axle load of just 12 tonnes, allowing efficient road travel and rapid site mobilization.

Modern features such as VarioBase® and VarioBallast® enhance lifting flexibility, optimize ground pressure distribution, and improve safety during complex lifts.

“Our flagship 300-tonne crane will empower us to manage larger loads with precision and speed,” Carroll said.

Long-Term Partnership With Liebherr

T3 Projects views Liebherr not just as a supplier, but as a long-term strategic partner.

“We intentionally selected Liebherr as an industry leader,” van den Barg concluded. “Advanced technology, performance, safety, and outstanding customer support are critical to our success.”
