Viastein Increases Handling Capacity with 3 Liebherr Tower Cranes

30-Second Takeaway

Hungarian precast concrete producer Viastein has strengthened production and storage logistics at its Biharkeresztes plant with the addition of three Liebherr tower cranes. The high-capacity crane trio improves material flow, expands outdoor storage capacity, and enables space-efficient handling of heavy precast components while maintaining uninterrupted production.

Logistics Upgrade at Biharkeresztes Plant

At its precast concrete facility in Biharkeresztes, Viastein has further optimised its manufacturing and storage logistics with the installation of new Liebherr tower cranes. At the end of August, a 1000 EC-H 40 Litronic and a 470 EC-B 20 were installed with support from Bayer Construct, expanding the existing crane fleet, which already included a 250 EC-B 12.

The primary objective of the investment was to expand outdoor storage capacity and significantly improve material flow between production, storage, and loading areas.

Supporting Heavy Precast Production

Viastein is one of Hungary’s leading producers of precast concrete elements, paving stones, and concrete products. The large and heavy components produced daily require powerful and precise lifting equipment for transport, stacking, and dispatch.

The three Liebherr tower cranes now handle these critical tasks, enabling space-saving, accurate, and efficient movement of building elements and optimising workflows throughout the production site.

Advantages of Tower Crane-Based Handling

Compared with alternative transport systems, Liebherr tower cranes offer several operational advantages. They require minimal ground space while providing large working radii, allowing heavy loads to be handled flexibly across multiple production zones.

This approach supports efficient site layouts and helps maximise usable storage space within the plant footprint.

Fast Installation Without Production Disruption

The installation of the 1000 EC-H 40 Litronic, the final crane in the upgrade, was completed within just a few days, from 28 August to 3 September 2025. Importantly, production continued without interruption throughout the installation period.

A detailed schedule was developed jointly by Viastein’s plant team, Liebherr, and Bayer Construct to ensure manufacturing and dispatch operations were unaffected.

Florian Gegier, Service Technician at Liebherr Tower Cranes, highlighted the cooperation on site:

“The assembly of the 1000 EC-H went smoothly, and the collaboration with Bayer on site was outstanding. Everything was perfectly prepared, which allowed us to erect and commission the crane quickly and safely.”

High-Capacity Lifting for Dense Storage

The 1000 EC-H 40 Litronic is particularly well suited to Viastein’s operational requirements. With a 45-metre jib, the crane can lift up to 20 tonnes, making it ideal for handling precast elements weighing up to 17 tonnes.

Commenting on the improved storage efficiency, the site manager said:

“Our production areas are at full capacity, and we want to store concrete, not air. With the Liebherr cranes, we can make our storage logistics significantly more efficient while saving valuable space.”

A High-Performance Crane Trio

Together, the 1000 EC-H 40, 470 EC-B 20, and 250 EC-B 12 form a high-performance lifting solution that permanently enhances Viastein’s production processes. The combination of lifting capacity, precision, and space efficiency supports the sustainable expansion of the company’s manufacturing output and storage logistics.
