Liebherr LTM 1400-6.1 Debuts in Paris with High-Performance Tower Crane Dismantling

30-Second Takeaway

The Liebherr LTM 1400-6.1 mobile crane, owned by Montagrues, made an impressive debut in Paris by dismantling a large 75–80 meter Liebherr tower crane under strict time pressure and within a highly restricted jobsite footprint. The 400-tonne, 6-axle crane demonstrated its standout capability through the rapid self-assembly of its Superlift (Y-guying) system, which was installed in less than one hour during its first-ever setup. Using Solidlink automatic quick coupling technology, the crane efficiently connected the Y-guying system to the telescopic boom with minimal manual input, significantly reducing setup time. Fully operational in around two hours, the crane delivered smooth and precise performance, proving its value as the most powerful 6-axle mobile crane in the world in demanding urban lifting conditions.

Liebherr LTM 1400-6.1 Mobile Crane

The Liebherr LTM 1400-6.1 mobile crane has delivered a strong first performance in Paris, dismantling an 80-metre-high construction crane under demanding site conditions. The project required both speed and precision due to limited space and strict scheduling.

Owned by Montagrues, the crane was positioned before daybreak on a confined footprint, with setup overseen by a Liebherr service technician. As a 400-tonne unit, the LTM 1400-6.1 sets a new benchmark as the most powerful 6-axle mobile crane in the world.

Rapid Superlift Assembly Reduces Setup Time

A key feature of the crane is the self-assembly of the Superlift (Y-guying) system, significantly reducing setup time and on-site labor.

“The new way of assembling the complete Y-guying system… really saves us an enormous amount of time. And speed is the decisive factor on our construction sites here in Paris,” said

Daniel Pereira, Managing Director of Montagrues.

Setup included:

  • Self-assembly of ballast frames and counterweights

  • Lifting the complete Y-guying system from a low-loader onto the undercarriage

  • Automatic hydraulic connection during boom luffing

  • Hydraulic bolting controlled by the operator

  • Manual electrical connection only

In total, approximately 90 tonnes of ballast were installed, with the full setup completed in around two hours. The Superlift system alone was installed in less than one hour, despite it being the first use.

Solidlink Enables Automated Coupling

The time-saving process is enabled by Solidlink, a fully automatic quick coupling system adapted from Liebherr’s earthmoving equipment. For the first time in a mobile crane, Solidlink allows the automatic connection of the Y-guying system to the telescopic boom, reducing manual intervention and improving efficiency.

“The Superlift was installed in less than an hour – and that was the very first time it was set up,”

Pereira confirmed.

Tower Crane Dismantling in Tight Space

Following assembly, the crane dismantled a Liebherr top-slewing crane with a hook height of 75 metres. The tower crane had originally been erected using an LTM 1450-8.1 approximately one year earlier. Due to availability, the LTM 1400-6.1 was deployed with a 17.5-metre fixed jib, delivering stable lifting performance despite the restricted site conditions. An LTM 1060-3.1 supported the attachment of the lattice jib.

Operator Feedback from Site

Daniel Correia of STME Grues, responsible for the dismantling operation, highlighted the crane’s performance in confined conditions:

“We have to make do with a very small footprint for the crane here, but the LTM 1400-6.1 can still be used brilliantly.”

STME Grues specializes in large tower crane assembly and worked in partnership with Montagrues due to the lifting requirements exceeding their in-house crane capacity.

Long-Term Liebherr Fleet Strategy

Both Montagrues and STME Grues operate exclusively with Liebherr cranes, reflecting long-term confidence in the manufacturer. Montagrues runs a fleet of around 40 mobile cranes, ranging from 30 tonnes to the LTM 1450-8.1, alongside tractor units and approximately 30 trailers.

“We have had a close partnership with Liebherr for some 40 years… Liebherr also offers first-class after-sales service. For us, Liebherr is simply the best manufacturer of mobile cranes,”

said Pereira.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Liebherr LTM 1400-6.1?

The LTM 1400-6.1 is Liebherr’s newest 400 tonne, 6 axle mobile crane and currently the most powerful crane in its class.

What made this Paris job significant?

It was the crane’s first deployment, dismantling a 75 to 80 metre tower crane under tight space and time constraints, proving its real world performance immediately.

What is the Superlift (Y-guying) system?

The Superlift system enhances lifting capacity and stability. On the LTM 1400-6.1, it can now be assembled much faster thanks to new technology.

How fast is the setup compared to traditional systems?

The Superlift system was installed in under an hour, with total setup including 90 tonnes of ballast completed in around two hours. This is significantly faster than previous methods.

What is Solidlink and why is it important?

Solidlink is an automatic quick coupling system that connects the Y-guying system to the boom. It reduces manual work, increases safety, and speeds up assembly.

Why is speed so critical on jobs like this?

Urban projects, especially in cities like Paris, have strict time windows, limited space, and high costs for delays. Faster setup improves efficiency and reduces risk.

How did the crane perform in tight space conditions?

Despite a very limited footprint, the LTM 1400-6.1 delivered strong performance, showing excellent maneuverability and lifting capability in confined environments.

What role did Liebherr support play?

A Liebherr service technician supervised setup, ensuring smooth execution and reinforcing the brand’s strong after sales support.

Who operated the crane?

Montagrues deployed the crane, working alongside STME Grues, specialists in tower crane assembly and dismantling.

Why do companies like Montagrues and STME rely on Liebherr?

They cite reliability, performance, innovation, and long term support, along with decades long partnerships, as key reasons for choosing Liebherr exclusively.
