HHLA Orders Eight Hybrid Konecranes Noell NSC 644 EHY Straddle Carriers to Support CO₂-Reduction Strategy

30 Second Takeaway

HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort GmbH has placed an order for eight hybrid Konecranes Noell NSC 644 EHY straddle carriers, replacing older diesel-driven machines. The new units will support quay-to-yard transport, stacking, and landside truck and rail handling, helping HHLA reduce CO₂ emissions while retaining operational flexibility and productivity.

Hybrid Straddle Carriers Support Sustainable Terminal Operations

HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort GmbH in Hamburg has ordered eight hybrid Konecranes Noell NSC 644 EHY straddle carriers as part of a broader strategy aimed at reducing fuel consumption and tailpipe emissions across terminal operations.

The new machines will replace older diesel-powered straddle carriers currently performing the same tasks, marking a significant step in modernizing the terminal’s equipment fleet while aligning with HHLA’s long-term environmental and operational objectives.

Equipment Designed for Quay, Yard, and Landside Handling

The NSC 644 EHY straddle carriers will be deployed across a wide range of terminal activities, including container transport between the quay and yard, stacking operations, and landside truck and rail handling. This versatility allows HHLA to optimize equipment utilization while maintaining consistent performance across different operational zones within the terminal.

Straddle carriers remain a critical component of container terminal logistics, providing flexible, high-throughput container movement and stacking capability. The hybrid configuration of the NSC 644 EHY enables these tasks to be carried out with reduced fuel consumption and emissions compared to conventional diesel-only machines.

Hybrid Drive with Modular Design Concept

The ordered straddle carriers are based on Konecranes’ latest design concept, which places a strong emphasis on drive system modularity. This approach allows terminal operators to adapt or modify the power configuration of their equipment over time, providing flexibility as operational requirements, energy strategies, and regulatory frameworks evolve.

By selecting a hybrid configuration, HHLA benefits from reduced emissions and improved fuel efficiency today, while retaining the option to adjust the drive setup in the future. This modular design helps protect long-term equipment investment and supports a phased approach to decarbonization.

Supporting CO₂-Reduction Goals Without Compromising Productivity

HHLA has extensive operational experience with Konecranes Noell Straddle Carriers, and the decision to invest in the NSC 644 EHY reflects confidence in both the equipment’s performance and its contribution to sustainability goals.

Ingo Witte, Managing Director of HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort GmbH, said:

“This investment supports our long-term development plans for Container Terminal Tollerort. We have extensive experience with Konecranes Noell Straddle Carriers and value their strong performance. Choosing their proven hybrid solution helps us to meet our CO₂-reduction goals while maintaining the high productivity we need in daily operations.”

Flexibility for Future Energy Transitions

From the manufacturer’s perspective, the modular design strategy is intended to give terminal operators greater control over how their fleets evolve over time.

Peter Kania, Sales Director, Port Solutions at Konecranes, commented:

“Our latest design concept was developed to give customers greater flexibility in how their machines are powered. By choosing this configuration, HHLA is protecting its long-term investment as operational requirements and CO₂-reduction strategies evolve.”

This flexibility is increasingly important as ports and terminals balance immediate emission-reduction targets with longer-term transitions toward alternative energy sources.
