Dutch heavy lift specialist Mammoet has relocated a beach pavilion on Texel island in North Holland using self-propelled modular transporters. The operation supported local coastal protection measures, allowing natural dune growth while safely repositioning the structure with minimal disruption.
Supporting Coastal Protection on Texel
Mammoet has successfully relocated a beach pavilion on Texel island in North Holland, the Netherlands, using Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMTs). The move was carried out for contractor JLD Contracting and formed part of wider efforts to support coastal protection and climate adaptation measures.
Local authorities recommended that sand dunes surrounding the pavilion be allowed to grow naturally to combat coastal erosion and rising sea levels. Relocating the building enabled this environmental strategy to proceed without the need to dismantle the structure.
Preparation and Engineering Works
Ready for Transport
Ahead of the move, JLD Contracting completed extensive preparation works at the new location. This included installing new piling and constructing a beam layer positioned perpendicular to the pavilion’s original foundation.
To protect the wooden structure during transport, a steel platform was installed beneath the building to prevent deformation while lifting and moving the pavilion.
The Relocation Operation
Precision Movement with SPMTs
Following the disconnection of all utilities, Mammoet positioned two SPMT trains beneath the pavilion. The transporters lifted the structure, transported it to the new site, and carefully lowered it onto the newly installed beams.
The entire transport operation took approximately ten minutes and was live-streamed online, drawing attention to the precision and efficiency of the move.
Pavilion Reopens at New Location
Paal 17 Aan Zee Back in Operation
The relocated pavilion, Paal 17 Aan Zee, is now fully operational at its new site. The successful move preserved a well-known beachfront destination while enabling long-term environmental protection measures to move forward.
