Liebherr Delivers 50,000th Mobile Crane as BKL Takes LTM 1300-6.4 in Frankfurt

30-Second Takeaway

Liebherr-Werk Ehingen GmbH has reached a major production milestone with the delivery of its 50,000th mobile crane, an LTM 1300-6.4, to BKL Baukran Logistik GmbH. The handover highlights more than five decades of mobile crane manufacturing at Ehingen and reinforces BKL’s continued investment in modern, high-performance Liebherr cranes for urban operations in Frankfurt.

Historic Production Milestone at Liebherr-Werk Ehingen

Liebherr-Werk Ehingen GmbH is celebrating an extraordinary milestone with the delivery of its 50,000th mobile crane. The anniversary crane, an LTM 1300-6.4, was officially handed over to BKL Baukran Logistik GmbH at the beginning of November.

Since the site was founded in 1969, Liebherr has continuously increased its production output. Key milestones include:

  • 20,000th crane in 2006

  • 30,000th crane eight years later

  • 40,000th crane after just six additional years

  • 50,000th mobile crane five years after that

The milestone reflects the sustained growth and industrial scale of mobile crane manufacturing at the Ehingen facility.

BKL Receives the Anniversary Crane in Ehingen

The anniversary crane was collected in person by Robert Popp, Managing Director of Technology at BKL, and Tizian Ochmann, Head of the BKL Frankfurt site, who travelled to Ehingen for the handover.

Popp commented on the occasion:

“We have a long-standing good partnership with Liebherr. We are therefore delighted to be able to take delivery of this special crane. At the same time, we congratulate Liebherr on this further major milestone in its impressive company history.”

LTM 1300-6.4 Joins the Frankfurt Fleet

The LTM 1300-6.4 will be stationed at BKL Frankfurt, where it replaces an LTM 1300-6.2.

Explaining the choice, Tizian Ochmann said:

“With its 90-metre telescopic boom, the new 300-tonne crane perfectly rounds off our portfolio in Frankfurt. The 6-axle crane is particularly well suited for inner-city areas. With its long boom, it can, for example, assemble construction cranes without a main boom extension. That will be one of its main tasks.”

Latest Generation Technology with LICCON3

Liebherr launched the LTM 1300-6.4 in spring 2024. Compared with its predecessor, the LTM 1300-6.3, the new model features:

  • A new cab design

  • The latest LICCON3 control system

  • Additional driver assistance systems

BKL already operates several LTM 1300-6.3 cranes in Frankfurt and at other locations. Ochmann noted:

“As we have had good experiences with these mobile cranes, we also opted for the successor model. In addition to the more modern control system, the LTM 1300-6.4 offers new driver assistance systems. This means that the crane fits in very well with BKL's fundamental orientation: technical progress with a modern and reliable crane fleet.”

LICCON3 Cranes and Electrified Equipment at BKL Frankfurt

The Frankfurt site already operates LICCON3-equipped cranes, including the LTM 1100-5.3 and LTM 1110-5.2.

Numerous mobile cranes are permanently stationed at the location, including modern Liebherr mobile construction cranes capable of operating with construction site power. The most recent addition to the fleet prior to the anniversary crane was the MK 120-5.1E.

Five Decades of Mobile Crane Manufacturing in Ehingen

Liebherr-Werk Ehingen GmbH was founded in 1969 as a subsidiary of the then sole proprietorship Hans Liebherr. Production of mobile cranes and ship cranes began the same year.

Key developments include:

  • First crawler cranes delivered in 1978, already exceeding 500-tonne lifting capacity

  • 1980 decision to focus exclusively on mobile cranes in Ehingen

  • Transfer of ship, offshore, and container crane production to Liebherr-Werk Nenzing GmbH

  • Transition in the mid-1980s to the LTM all-terrain crane series, combining road and off-road capability

These developments formed the foundation of Liebherr’s long-standing market leadership in mobile cranes.

Today, Liebherr produces around 2,000 mobile cranes per year at the Ehingen site.
