Hands on the Future at Bauma 2025

The future of the construction and machinery world takes center stage at Bauma 2025, where Liebherr will present its latest innovations under the motto “Hands on the future.” The theme reflects Liebherr’s commitment to addressing tomorrow’s challenges today through advanced engineering, sustainable solutions, and operator-focused design.

Among the cranes featured for demonstration and display is the Liebherr LTM 1650-8.1, an all-terrain crane designed for maximum performance across a wide range of demanding lifting applications.

Visitors can experience the LTM 1650-8.1 at Liebherr’s outdoor booths 809–810 and 812–813, where the company will showcase how its mobile crane portfolio continues to push the boundaries of lifting capability.

LTM 1650-8.1: Power Meets Versatility

The Liebherr LTM 1650-8.1 is an 8-axle all-terrain crane with a nominal lifting capacity of 700 tonnes, delivering between 15% and 50% higher performance than its predecessor, the LTM 1500-8.1 depending on configuration.

The crane features two interchangeable telescopic boom systems:

  • 54-metre telescopic boom

  • 80-metre telescopic boom

Thanks to Liebherr’s easy-change system, operators can swap boom configurations efficiently, allowing the crane to adapt quickly to different job requirements.

The crane is also equipped with VarioBallast®, enabling infinite adjustment of the ballast radius via hydraulic slewing. This allows operators to optimize setup even in confined spaces, improving both safety and site flexibility.

Efficiency Built In

Beyond lifting performance, the LTM 1650-8.1 incorporates Liebherr’s ECOdrive system, which contributes to:

  • Reduced fuel consumption

  • Lower noise emissions

  • Optimized engine performance during crane operation

These features make the crane particularly well suited for urban, infrastructure, and environmentally sensitive job sites.

Proven Performance in the Field

In January 2025, the LTM 1650-8.1 was deployed by Steil, a German crane service provider, to install 45-tonne gate leaves at a lock in Müden, Germany. The crane’s rapid setup and intuitive operation were key to overcoming site-specific logistical challenges and completing the installation efficiently.

In another major application, two LTM 1650-8.1 cranes were used to unload massive wind turbine rotor blades at Jade-Weser Port near Wilhelmshaven in northern Germany.

Operated by Hamburg-based crane companies Knaack and Thömen (Hüffermann Group), each crane was configured with:

  • 28-metre telescopic boom

  • 49-metre luffing jib

  • 155 tonnes of ballast

  • Lifting radii of up to 53 metres

This tandem operation highlighted the crane’s suitability for large-scale wind energy logistics and port handling operations.

Applications Across Multiple Sectors

The LTM 1650-8.1 is engineered for a wide variety of heavy-lift environments, including:

  • Wind turbine construction and maintenance

  • Heavy construction and infrastructure projects

  • Petrochemical plants and refineries

  • Power generation facilities

  • Communication and transmission infrastructure

Its combination of lifting power, transport efficiency, and configuration flexibility makes it a key asset for complex lifting tasks worldwide.
