Mammoet Implements HVO Fuel Across the Netherlands, UK and Canada

30 Second Takeaway

Mammoet has confirmed it will introduce Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuel across its operations in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Canada from Q2 2025. The move responds to growing customer demand for lower-carbon solutions and forms a key part of Mammoet’s wider carbon reduction strategy, enabling immediate emissions reductions across its heavy lift and transport fleet.

Expanding Low-Carbon Operations

Mammoet has announced plans to implement HVO fuel across its operations in the Netherlands, the UK and Canada starting in Q2 2025. The heavy lift and transport specialist says the move underlines its commitment to developing more sustainable ways of delivering complex lifting and transport projects.

The decision follows increasing demand from customers for lower-carbon solutions and sits within Mammoet’s broader carbon reduction programme.

Understanding HVO Fuel

Immediate Emissions Reduction

Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) is a diesel replacement fuel produced from vegetable oils and animal fats. When compared with conventional diesel, HVO can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90 percent over its lifecycle.

By adopting HVO, Mammoet can achieve a meaningful reduction in emissions immediately, while continuing to develop longer-term solutions such as grid power, battery operation, and hydrogen for large-scale and remote projects.

Focus on HVO100

Compatible with Existing Equipment

Mammoet’s objective is to use HVO100, which is produced from 100 percent renewable raw materials, wherever possible. The fuel is fully mixable with existing diesel stocks and compatible with most diesel engines, allowing rapid implementation without requiring fleet modifications.

This compatibility enables HVO to be introduced quickly across Mammoet’s existing equipment, including trucks, mobile cranes and self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs).

Infrastructure and Change Management

Preparing for Large-Scale Adoption

The rollout of HVO has been supported by significant change management programmes within Mammoet’s local organisations. These changes cover both operational processes and physical infrastructure.

Mammoet will supply HVO through its own network of fuel stations, serving equipment at sites across the Netherlands, its UK bases in Hixon and Teesside, and multiple branches in Canada.

Supporting Customer Sustainability Goals

Lower-Emission Project Options

Beyond reducing emissions from its own operations, the adoption of HVO will allow Mammoet to offer customers specific project solutions where reduced emissions are required. This includes projects with strict environmental targets or sustainability reporting requirements.

The HVO rollout complements Mammoet’s other recent investments in sustainable operations, including electric-powered SPMTs, battery-powered ring cranes, and wider deployment of electric equipment across its fleet.

Industry Perspective

Leading the Market in Sustainable Heavy Lift

Pascal Eeken, Improvement and Innovation Manager at Mammoet Europe, said the initiative represents a major step forward.

“This is a significant step we are taking to reduce our carbon footprint. By being the first large heavy lifting and transport company to commit to this new fuel at scale, we will drive down our emissions and showcase that we are also the market leader on this front.”

About Mammoet

Mammoet is a global leader in engineered heavy lifting and transport services, supporting complex infrastructure, energy, and industrial projects worldwide. The company continues to invest in low- and zero-emission technologies to improve safety, efficiency, and sustainability across its operations.
