Turbine Component Deliveries Begin at Stranoch Wind Farm in Dumfries and Galloway

30 Second Takeaway

A major construction milestone has been reached at Stranoch wind farm in Dumfries and Galloway, with the first deliveries of wind turbine components now arriving on site. Blades and tower sections supplied by Vestas are being transported from the Port of Cairnryan under police escort, marking the start of a coordinated heavy transport phase that will continue through to early December.

Heavy Transport for Onshore Wind Projects

Large onshore wind developments require carefully planned logistics operations to move oversized components from ports to remote construction sites. Blade and tower section deliveries often involve long-distance road transport, police escorts and strict scheduling to minimise disruption on local road networks.

As wind farm projects scale up in size and capacity, coordination between developers, transport specialists, local authorities and communities is critical to ensuring safe and efficient delivery operations.

Turbine Deliveries Arrive at Stranoch Wind Farm

Deliveries of key turbine components have begun at Stranoch wind farm, a major onshore wind project located near New Luce in Dumfries and Galloway. The first batches include turbine blades and tower sections supplied by Vestas, delivered to site as construction progresses.

The components are being transported from the Port of Cairnryan to the wind farm under Police Scotland escort, with specialist heavy transport contractor Collett managing the logistics operation.

Deliveries will take place in scheduled convoys over the coming weeks and months, forming a critical phase of the overall construction programme.

Convoy Planning and Community Coordination

To reduce disruption on local roads, convoys are planned to operate twice daily on weekdays. Police Scotland and the project’s transport team will work to maintain traffic flow and create opportunities for vehicles to pass where possible along the route.

EDF power solutions UK has been engaging regularly with residents and communities likely to be affected by the transport activity. Delivery schedules are expected to continue until early December, although timings remain subject to weather conditions and police guidance.

Project Scale and Construction Timeline

Stranoch wind farm is a 20-turbine, 102MW onshore wind project. Construction began in May 2024 and is expected to continue through to early 2027, with turbine installation forming a major milestone within the broader programme.

The project contributes to the expansion of renewable energy capacity in southern Scotland and forms part of EDF power solutions UK’s wider onshore wind portfolio.

Industry Collaboration and Safety Focus

Yusuf Patel, Chief Technical Officer at EDF power solutions UK, highlighted the importance of collaboration during the delivery phase.

“This is a fantastic milestone in the construction of Stranoch wind farm, and we are pleased to be working closely with Vestas and Police Scotland in safely delivering the components,” said Patel.“We thank residents and road users for their patience as we progress this critical stage.”

Community Investment Commitments

As part of its community commitments, EDF power solutions UK launched a £20,000 annual sponsorship fund earlier this year, with several local groups already benefiting.

Once Stranoch wind farm becomes operational, this initiative will be replaced by a community benefit fund of approximately £510,000 per year, supporting long-term local projects and initiatives in the surrounding area.
