Künz and ABB to Supply Nine Automated Rail Mounted Stacking Cranes for TraPac Los Angeles Expansion

30-Second Takeaway

Künz GmbH and ABB have been selected to deliver nine Rail Mounted Stacking Cranes for TraPac LLC’s terminal expansion in Los Angeles. Scheduled for delivery between 2027 and 2028, the cranes will support increased container handling capacity while strengthening Künz’ growing presence in the U.S. port and logistics market.

Künz and ABB Secure Major Container Terminal Crane Order in Los Angeles

Künz GmbH and ABB have secured a contract to supply nine Rail Mounted Stacking Cranes (RMGs) for the expansion of TraPac LLC’s container terminal in Los Angeles, California.

The order forms part of a broader terminal expansion and infrastructure modernisation programme aimed at increasing yard capacity and supporting long-term container handling operations at one of the busiest logistics gateways on the U.S. West Coast.

According to the companies, crane deliveries are scheduled between 2027 and 2028.

The project further strengthens Künz’ position within the North American port equipment sector and expands the company’s footprint across the U.S. West Coast container handling market.

New RMG Cranes to Support Terminal Capacity Expansion

The new Rail Mounted Stacking Cranes will play a central role in improving operational efficiency and increasing container storage capacity at the TraPac terminal.

Expansion Designed for Long-Term Growth

TraPac’s investment forms part of its wider strategy to support:

  • Higher container throughput

  • Improved yard operations

  • Long-term cargo growth

  • Enhanced terminal efficiency

The new automated crane systems are expected to improve container handling performance while supporting increasingly complex logistics demands at the Port of Los Angeles.

Deliveries Scheduled Between 2027 and 2028

The companies confirmed that crane deliveries and installation activities will take place over a multi-year schedule extending through 2028.

The phased rollout is designed to align with the terminal’s ongoing expansion and operational development programme.

Künz and ABB Continue Longstanding Technology Partnership

The project builds on a long-established collaboration between Künz and ABB in the global port equipment and container handling sector.

Künz to Manufacture Structural and Mechanical Components

Under the agreement, Künz will:

  • Manufacture the crane steel structures in Europe

  • Integrate all mechanical systems

  • Oversee crane engineering and assembly operations

Final assembly will take place in Poland to ensure the cranes are fully erected and tested prior to delivery.

ABB to Deliver Electrification and Automation Systems

ABB will provide the cranes’:

  • Electrification systems

  • Automation technologies

  • Control systems

The company said its technologies are designed to improve long-term terminal efficiency, reliability, and operational performance.

Companies Highlight Operational Performance and Reliability

Executives from all three companies emphasised the importance of reliability, automation, and operational efficiency in the project.

Künz Highlights International Container Industry Expertise

David Moosbrugger, Managing Director of Künz, said the agreement reflects the company’s growing international presence in the container handling sector.

“The contract at TraPac underlines our capability in the international container industry,” said Moosbrugger.

TraPac Focused on Long-Term Infrastructure Investment

TraPac CEO Cameron Thorpe said the decision to partner with Künz and ABB was based on proven operational performance and equipment reliability.

“We selected Künz and ABB based on their proven ability to deliver reliable, high-performing equipment,” said Thorpe.
“This investment strengthens our terminal infrastructure and supports our continued growth.”

ABB Emphasises Efficiency and Capacity Improvements

Clara Holmgren, Global Business Line Manager, Ports at ABB, said ABB’s automation technologies will support the terminal’s future operational demands.

“Our electrification and control technologies will support TraPac’s long-term efficiency and capacity,” said Holmgren.

Project Strengthens Künz’ U.S. West Coast Presence

The TraPac project represents another important milestone in Künz’ North American growth strategy.

West Coast Market Remains Strategic Growth Area

Künz identified the U.S. West Coast as a key region for future expansion due to:

  • Growing port infrastructure investment

  • Rising cargo volumes

  • Increasing automation demand

  • Long-term terminal modernisation programmes

The Los Angeles terminal project further positions the company within one of the world’s most important container handling markets.
