Schwarze ASC GmbH is enhancing its fleet with the acquisition of a new LTM 1150-5.3 mobile crane from Liebherr. This strategic investment not only underscores the firm’s commitment to utilizing proven technology but also reinforces its dedication to climate protection. The new crane is designed to operate exclusively on HVO 100, a fuel derived from hydrotreated vegetable oils, which enables a remarkable CO₂ reduction of up to 90 percent during operation.

Nina Schwarze, Managing Director of the family-owned company, stated, “Our previous experiences with the LTM 1130-5.1 have been exceptional, and we are thrilled to efficiently and sustainably address the performance class below our 220-tonner with this 150-ton crane.” The choice to partner with Liebherr was intentional, reflecting the longstanding, successful relationship and the machinery's impressive resale value.

“Schwarze goes green” with LTM 1150-5.3

Under the guiding principle of “Schwarze goes green,” the company is actively implementing a comprehensive sustainability strategy. In March 2025, Schwarze ASC GmbH transitioned its entire operations to alternative fuel sources. “This year, we anticipate a reduction of approximately 850 tonnes of CO2 emissions, an amount that would require 68,000 trees to absorb annually,” explains Nina. Consequently, the compatibility of the new crane with sustainable fuels was of paramount importance; like all Liebherr mobile and crawler cranes, the LTM 1150-5.3 is fully certified for operation with HVO.

Since September 2021, all new mobile and crawler cranes manufactured in Ehingen have been exclusively fueled with pure HVO fuel for test drives, crane acceptances, and their initial fueling. This initiative positions the Ehingen crane manufacturer as a pioneer within the industry. “I became aware of HVO during Liebherr’s recent customer days, and the concept resonated deeply with me. For us, HVO represents a deliberate commitment to enhanced climate protection, even though this alternative to diesel is currently more expensive. What truly inspired me was HVO 100's ability to enable existing technology—particularly heavy combustion engines—to operate virtually CO₂-neutrally without requiring any modifications. In my view, this approach is significantly more sustainable than awaiting the development of new technologies that, in some areas of this sector, are yet to materialize,” Nina reports.

Schwarze’s sustainability strategy further encompasses the establishment of a photovoltaic plant, the utilization of rainwater, an electrified fleet, and a bee-keeping initiative on site. The transition to HVO marks yet another significant milestone in our ongoing journey toward sustainability.
