Tadano to Acquire IHI Transport Machinery’s Transportation Systems Business

Updated: Jan 2

30 Second Takeaway

Tadano has announced the acquisition of the transportation systems business of IHI Transport Machinery Co., Ltd., further expanding its global lifting portfolio. Following its recent acquisition of Manitex, the move strengthens Tadano’s strategy to diversify its lifting solutions, adding tower, port, offshore and wind power crane capabilities while enhancing synergies with its crawler crane operations.

Portfolio Diversification in the Global Lifting Market

As global construction, infrastructure, port and offshore wind projects grow in scale and complexity, lifting equipment manufacturers are increasingly expanding their portfolios beyond traditional crane categories. Customers are seeking integrated solutions that span multiple lifting applications, from industrial construction to ports, offshore and renewable energy.

Tadano’s latest acquisition reflects a broader industry trend toward diversification, enabling manufacturers to provide end-to-end lifting solutions while strengthening long-term customer relationships.

Acquisition Expands Tadano’s Lifting Capabilities

Tadano has confirmed it will acquire the transportation systems business of IHI Transport Machinery Co., Ltd., a consolidated subsidiary of IHI Corporation, headquartered in Koto-ku, Tokyo. The acquisition follows Tadano’s recent purchase of U.S.-based Manitex, marking another step in the company’s growth strategy.

The transaction aligns with Tadano’s Mid-Term Management Plan, which focuses on delivering new value for customers by diversifying the company’s lifting equipment portfolio and expanding its presence across global markets.

Adding New Crane and Handling Technologies

With more than 50 years of experience in engineering and manufacturing, IHI Transport Machinery’s transportation systems business brings a broad range of equipment and expertise to Tadano.

Its portfolio includes:

  • Jib Climbing Cranes

  • Port and Large Offshore Cranes

  • Wind Power Cranes

  • Bulk Handling Systems

The acquisition adds new product categories to Tadano’s offering, including tower cranes and port cranes, while creating synergies with Tadano’s German-based lattice boom crawler crane business.

“We are excited to further enact our Mid-Term Management Plan through this acquisition,”

said Toshiaki Ujiie, President & CEO of Tadano Ltd.

“Tadano remains focused on the global lifting market and offers over a century of industry experience. Tower and Port Cranes are new products for our group, and they give Tadano the ability to develop deeper relationships with our customers and better serve their lifting needs.”

Supporting Offshore Wind and Heavy Lift Synergies

The integration of IHI’s transportation systems business is also expected to support Tadano’s offshore wind strategy, particularly through Ring Lift Cranes and their compatibility with Tadano’s crawler crane technologies.

“Additionally, the Ring Lift Cranes offer many synergies with our Lattice Boom Crawler Cranes manufactured by Tadano in Germany, and we anticipate these cranes will supplement our offshore wind power equipment needs,” Ujiie added.

End-to-End Management of New Crane Lines

Through the acquisition, Tadano will assume responsibility for the full lifecycle management of the new crane and transportation systems business. This includes planning, development, design, manufacturing, sales, installation, maintenance, repair and operation of the equipment.

The expanded portfolio is expected to support multiple sectors, including general industry, construction, ports and offshore, wind power, and bulk handling systems, reinforcing Tadano’s position as a comprehensive lifting solutions provider.

“This acquisition represents a strong commitment to customers and stakeholders,” said Ujiie.“The combination of their transportation system business with Tadano’s existing resources is expected to deliver even greater value and strengthen leadership in the crane industry.”
